College Football Picks: Georgia Tech at Kansas
The Kansas Jayhawks were on the wrong end of the biggest upset during the opening week of college football. FCS opponent North Dakota State stymied KU’s offense and left Lawrence with a 6-3 victory. An 0-2 start to the season looks inevitable when 15th ranked Georgia Tech rolls into town Saturday. The Yellow Jackets used their powerful triple option attack to post a 41-10 win over South Carolina State. Tech is a 14 point favorite.

Turner Gill’s coaching debut at Kansas was a nightmare for the former coach of the Buffalo Bison. KU struggled to move the ball on offense and used two quarterbacks in the opener. Running the ball behind an experienced offensive line was a huge issue as the Jayhawks gained just 96 yards on 32 carries. Gill is notorious for his run first mentality, but might have to adjust his play calling after the dismal first game. QB Kale Pick saw the majority of snaps behind center, throwing for 138 yards and an interception. Jordan Webb saw the field also and threw for 59 yards on six completions. Gill stated that he will stick with Pick at QB against Georgia Tech. WR Daymond Patterson led the team in rushing with 63 yards on three carries and caught four passes for an additional 66 yards. The running backs were ineffective as Kansas tried three different backs who all had the same level of production. Moving Toben Opurum to linebacker looks to be a huge mistake by the coaching staff. Opurum ran for 554 yards and nine scores as a true freshman. The defense played well, holding NDSU to 168 total yards for the game. A much stiffer test awaits on Saturday that will test the discipline of the Jayhawk defense.
Georgia Tech lost a vast amount of talent to the NFL during the off-season, but they still showcased their potent rushing attack behind QB Josh Nesbitt in the opener. Nesbitt scored three times and gained 130 yards on the ground. Passing still seems to be a work in progress for the senior signal caller as he completed just 1 of 6 passes for eight yards and an interception. RB Roddy Jones will fill the shoes of departed star back Jonathan Dwyer. He rushed for 45 yards and two scores in limited duty. Louisville transfer Anthony Allen had a great spring and will play an important role in the backfield also. The Yellow Jackets accumulated 372 yards rushing using 11 players in all to carry the ball. WR Stephen Hill was the leading receiver with two receptions for 12 yards. Eight starters return on defense for Tech, but they did allow 178 yards on the ground a week ago. It will be interesting to see how the Kansas defense stands up to the triple option attack.
This is a tricky game to call for a variety of reasons. Kansas has to be fuming after their embarrassing loss last week and beating a ranked opponent at home will make fans forget quickly. The Yellow Jackets were not tested in their opener and are prone to turning the ball over with so much going on during one play. Bettors have favored Tech in this match-up for good reason and I predict a 35-14 final.
