College Football Power Rankings – Week 13
Alabama keeps the top spot in the power rankings after staying undefeated by beating Mississippi State last week. It wasn’t really an impressive win, but convincing enough to let you know the Tide are still for real. At this point in the season, it’s hard to say they are the best team in the country. Their wins over ranked SEC opponents don’t seem as impressive when you consider all of the teams they have beaten have gone on to lose more games. Because of their record, their conference, and their BCS points, we’re keeping them in the top spot, but Texas Tech is just as deserving.
The biggest game of the year for the Texas Tech Red Raiders is obviously this week against Oklahoma. You could make an argument that Tech’s wins over Texas and Oklahoma State should give them position over Alabama in the power rankings, but we’ll hold off one more week to see what Tech is really made of.
There’s really no hotter team than the Florida Gators right now. They have been destroying every team they play, even ranked SEC opponents. This week they have a cake-walk against Citadel. The SEC Championship game is the only remaining game that really matters for the Gators.
Texas impressed on the road last week against Kansas. The Jayhawks aren’t nearly as good as they were thought to be, but the Longhorns avoided a late-season slip against a dangerous team. The defense played much better, which bodes well for the Longhorns down the line. Texas will be mighty interested in the score of that Oklahoma/Texas Tech game, a long with the rest of us.
The Sooners might be playing better football than Texas right now, but since the Longhorns beat them on neutral ground, they get ranked a spot above. Oklahoma’s biggest game of the year is this week. A win over Texas Tech keeps their hopes for a national title run alive. Things won’t be easy, but the Sooners rarely, rarely lose on their home turf. This week Oklahoma is a 7 point favorite and the total for the game is set at 75 points.
USC’s offense has been very inconsistent, but the defense is maybe the best in the nation. Don’t expect the Trojans to lose any more regular season games, if any at all. Pete Carroll is 26-0 with USC in November all-time.
Penn State will be left wondering what might have been after their loss to Iowa two weeks ago, but a win this week gives them a trip to the Rose Bowl, plust the 800th win in the history of the program. Still think the Nittany Lions don’t have anything to play for this week?
The Boise State Broncos continue to dominate and wait to be recognized on the national scene. There’s still a good chance that Boise sneaks into a BCS bowl, but things need to continue to go their way to guarantee it. What the Broncos really need is for Utah to lose this week against BYU, it’s a tall order, but don’t count out the possibility.
Utah has a huge game this week against BYU. The Cougars are dangerous to say the least, but the Utes’ defense has been surprisingly stout throughout their 11-0 run. They are currently ranked above Boise State in the BCS rankings and a win over BYU this week would create even more distance. Utah is currently a 6.5 point favorite over BYU with the total at 53.5 points.
The best 2-loss team in the nation is the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Sure, the big losses to Texas and Texas Tech hurt, but they’ve played some great football this season.
