College Football Power Rankings: Week 14
Alabama maintains the top spot in the Power Rankings if only because they are the only undefeated team left from a BCS conference. They deserve their due credit, but if they played Florida or Oklahoma right now, would they be favored? Probably not. Alabama is a 14.5 point favorite over Auburn this week.
The Florida Gators predictably destroyed The Citadel last week by scoring 70 points, most of them coming with the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th string in. Sure it was a crappy opponent, but Florida continues to impress on the field with each passing week.
Oklahoma was the team to finally end the Cinderella run that Texas Tech was having, and in dominating fashion. The Sooners are playing better than any team other than the Florida Gators right now. There’s still a lot to play out in the BCS rankings for Oklahoma. If they win against Oklahoma State this week there will be plenty of controversy as to where the Sooners deserved to be ranked and wether or not they belong in the Big 12 Championship game.
Texas was idle last week and they face Texas A&M this week. There should be no problem getting past the Aggies, but the Longhorns wonder if they are fighting a losing battle with the BCS rankings with the Sooners on the rise. No doubt Texas players, coaches, and fans will be huge Oklahoma State Cowboy fans this week.
Maybe USC hasn’t been as dominant this season as they have in the past, but I still don’t think anyone wants to run into the Trojans right now. When their offense is “on” they are virtually unstoppable because their defensive unit is so very strong. USC plays Notre Dame this week, but does anyone even care anymore?
Penn State clinched a Rose Bowl birth with a convincing win over Michigan State last week. The BCS Bowl bid is a great accomplishment, but it has all seemed very anti-climatic. Penn State was expected to deliver Joe Pa another championship this year.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders are still a great story this season, just not as good as they once were. Nobody really saw the blowout coming, but nobody is exactly shocked. They had a great run and it’s sad to see it come to an end, but give credit to a team that no expert thought would be in nearly this good of a situation at the beginning of the 2008 season. Texas Tech is favored by 20 points over Baylor this week.
Utah got the job done against BYU last week and moved to a perfect 12-0 on the season. The only problem? They don’t play in one of the major conferences. Does anyone really think they’d be so successful in the Big 12 or the SEC? We’ll never know, but the Utes will likely be playing a BCS conference powerhouse in whichever BCS bowl they are placed in.
Boise State also finished the regular season undefeated. The little school that could just keeps racking up wins and WAC titles, but they still don’t get all that much respect on the national scene. As with Utah, it’s hard to imagine the Broncos having the same success in a more difficult conference, but their consistent domination of their conference is quite amazing.
Oklahoma State rounds out the top 10 in our College Football Power Rankings. The Cowboys are still probably the best 2 loss team in the country, even with Georgia and Ohio State lurking just behind them. They beat Missouri and played Texas close (but not Texas Tech), but their season will be defined by their performance this week against the Sooners.
