2009 UL Lafayette NCAA Football Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd

ul-lafayette-52909The Ragin’ Cajuns of UL Lafayette boast the Sun Belt’s best offense and have ranked in the top 12 nationally in rushing offense each of the last four seasons, but with the big guns gone it will be interesting to see is they can continue to rack up points. An experienced offensive line will do its best to keep UL Lafayette among the top rushing teams in the country. Bet football this season with BetUS!

Offense – When I say UL Lafayette will be without its big guns, I mean it won’t have the luxury of handing the ball off to career rushing leader Tyrell Fenroy and it won’t have dual threat quarterback Michael Desormeax to make plays. The success of the Ragin’ Cajuns will depend largely on how well it is able to fill those two giant holes. Sophomores Brad McGuire and Chris Masson battled through the spring for the starting QB job, but it looks like Masson could have the edge with McGuire going down with a sports hernia injury. Those who went to the game will agree that Masson was impressive in the spring inter-squad scrimmage. The running back job should belong to senior Undrea Sails. He has some game experience. The Cajuns are still looking for a go-to wide receiver to complement solid tight end Ladarius Green. Green had five touchdown grabs last season as a freshman. The Cajuns have a couple reliable targets in Louis Lee and Richie Falgout, but it doesn’t appear they will have a burner like Jason Chery was for them in 2008. Hopefully, an offensive line which returns all five starters, and features First-team All-Sun Belt selections Chris Fisher and Brad Bustle, can make life easier for the skill guys as they take on bigger roles.

Defense – This unit could make or break the Cajuns in 2009. It was crushed by the injury bug a season ago and ranked as one of the worst defensive units in the country as a result, allowing 33.7 points per game and 429.6 yards per game. Senior linebacker Antwyne Zanders, who is a two-time all-league performer, returns to anchor the defense. He will be glad to have fellow linebackers Grant Fleming and Richard Brooks back on the field after missing most of 2008 with knee injuries. The defensive front line was not able to consistently apply pressure on opposing quarterbacks and the secondary struggled as a result. Both units should be improved with a trio of starters returning in each. This unit should be better than it was in 2008, as long as it stays healthy. The defense will have to come up big early in the season while the offense goes through some growing pains with new players at skill spots.

Prediction: 7th Sun Belt – The offense returns its entire line and the defense should be better, but losing Tyrell Fenroy and Michael Desormeaux figure to be two hurdles the Ragin’ Cajuns won’t be able to overcome.
