College Football Top 25 Week 1 Recap
No. 19 Utah beats Utah State 35-17 –The Aggies hung in their early, trailing just 17-26 at the half, but the Utes proved to be too much in half number two as they pitched a shut out the rest of the way.
No. 14 Boise State beats No. 16 Oregon 19-8 – I guess when Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount said the Ducks owed the Broncos a butt whooping, he meant after the game was over because it sure didn’t go down that way during regulation. The smurf turf prevails again.
No. 6 Ohio State beats Navy 31-27 –The Buckeyes were likely looking ahead here, but I’m not going to take anything away from a gutsy performance by Navy. We’ll find out what Ohio State is really made of this week against USC.
No. 9 Penn State beats Akron 31-7 –I knew this one was going to be a blowout as the Nittany Lions brought back plenty of talent, but what I didn’t know is that Joe Pa would completely call of the dogs in the second half to cost me a 2-point against the spread loss.

No. 22 Iowa beats Northern Iowa 17-16 – Rivalry games have given the Hawkeyes trouble in the past and they were nearly bitten by one in Week 1. It took consecutive field goal blocks in the waning seconds to survive the Panthers and Iowa gets no break as it heads to Ames for another rivalry showdown with the Big 12’s Iowa State Cyclones in Week 2.
No. 15 Georgia Tech beats Jacksonville State 37-17 -This one wasn’t even as close as the final score indicates with the Jackets jumping out to a 17-0 advantage and then calling off the dogs.
No. 4 USC beats San Jose State 56-3 – So far so good for freshman QB Matt Barkley, but his true test lies ahead in Week 2 when the Trojans visit Ohio State in the Horseshoe.
No. 23 Notre Dame beats Nevada 35-0 – While the Irish were expected to be able to put points on the board, the defense was a question mark entering the season. They made a statement in Week 1 by shutting out an offense that ranked No. 5 in the country in total offense last season.
No. 9 Oklahoma State beats No. 13 Georgia 24-13 – The Cowboys survived their first test of the season and likely won’t be tested again until mid-October when Mizzou visits.
No. 21 North Carolina beats Citadel 40-6 – Citadel held the Heels scoreless in the first quarter, but then UNC exploded with a 23-point second quarter to blow this one wide open.
No. 1 Florida beats Charleston Southern 62-3 – Not much to say here. Florida could have won by as much as it wanted.
No. 24 Nebraska beats Florida Atlantic 49-3 – Could this be the year the Huskers get back on top of the Big 12 North? The offense certainly looked good against FAU, but I’m looking forward to seeing how it performs against the Virginia Tech Hokies in Week 3.
No. 20 BYU beats No. 3 Oklahoma 14-13 – Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford goes down and so does the Sooners. I know BYU is a top 25 team, but this was still the biggest Week 1 shocker.
No. 2 Texas beats Louisiana Monroe 59-20 –Texas rolled as expected and I can’t see anyone touching them before the October 17th Red River Shootout.
No. 25 Kansas beats Northern Colorado 49-3 –The Jayhawks prove the offense is still high octane with QB Todd Reesing running the show. The Jayhawks should be in the mix for the Big 12 North crown as well.
No. 12 Cal beats Maryland 52-13 – Cal figures to be USC’s biggest competition in the Pac-10 and the Bears proved they are the real deal by burying another BCS team.
No. 5 Alabama beats No. 7 Virginia Tech 34-24 - Bama may have lost several key players on offense off of last year’s team, but it proved that it is still a force to be reckoned with by outgaining the Hokies by nearly 350 yards.
No. 11 LSU beats Washington 31-23 – This was kind of a moral victory for Washington, which finished 0-12 last season, hanging in there against a much more talented team.
No. 8 Ole Miss beats Memphis 45-14 – The Rebs weren’t about to let the Tigers jump up and bite them in this rivalry game. QB Jevan Snead finally got it going late to help Ole Miss bury the Tigers.
Miami beats No. 18 Florida State 38-34 – The Seminoles held a 9-point lead in the third and a 7-point lead in the fourth, but the never say die Hurricanes pulled off the upset in Tallahassee.
