Week 12 College Football Top Matchups

Written by Jack Jones

It seems like this is the first weekend all year that college football doesn’t have a big game in the national spotlight, but that will probably only further hype up the anticipation on the games for next week as several of those games will have a big effect on conference titles, who makes the BCS, and who has a chance at winning the title.

The major week 13 game will be Texas Tech heading to Norman to take on Oklahoma. There is also the Holy War between Utah and BYU, the Big 10’s final weekend with Michigan State taking on Penn State for the conference title, and a Big East battle between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.

However, let’s not get ahead of ourselves as we take a look at some of the top matchups for week 12.

Thursday – Virginia Tech at Miami (-4.5)

Miami has quietly started to turn their program back around as the Hurricanes have won four straight games and have a chance to make a run in the ACC Atlantic. They have to get past Virginia Tech on Thursday though, a team that has won two straight in South Florida and four of the last five in the series. The Hokies are struggling though with a 2-3 record on the road with their wins coming by five or fewer points. Want to win this game? See who Jack Jones is taking.

Texas (-13.5) at Kansas

Texas didn’t waste any time getting back on track after their loss to Texas Tech, as the Longhorns blew out Baylor 45-21 last Saturday. This team needs to win out, but even at 11-1 wouldn’t be guaranteed a shot at the Big 12 Championship, let alone the national title unless they get some help. Kansas has lost three of their last four games with the Jayhawks giving up 51 ppg in the three losses. That should mean that Colt McCoy and the Longhorn offense should be able to hit pay dirt plenty of times in this one. Head coach Mack Brown will probably try to make a statement with a blow out win too just to remind pollsters about how good Texas is.

South Carolina at Florida (-21)

Steve Spurrier returns to the swamp again to face his former school. Last year this game wasn’t even close as the Gators posted a 51-31 win on the road. Even though the spread is only three touchdowns some pundits think that number is a little low since Florida’s eight wins have come by an average of 34.8 points. Still, the Gamecocks are 7-3 and haven’t lost a game by more than a touchdown this season.

Southern California (-23) at Stanford

Pete Carrol and company have to remember last season when Stanford pulled one of the biggest upsets in college football history, winning on the road as a 39.5 point underdog. That hasn’t stopped the odds makers from listing USC as heavy favorites in this one as the Trojans try to continue to impress voters with their domination of the Pac-10.
