Could Gruden Coach Browns in 2011?
Jon Gruden is expected to be back doing “Monday Night Football” games in 2010, and all I can say is thank God. I couldn’t stand it if the network brought back Tony Kornheiser, or worse yet, Dennis Miller. While we likely won’t see Gruden on the sidelines in 2010, it doesn’t mean that he couldn’t be back coaching as soon as 2011.
Sports Illustrated reports that new Cleveland Browns shot caller Mike Holmgren might wait another year to decide on Eric Mangini, and then hire Gruden. This same methodology could apply to other organizations like Tampa Bay, St. Louis, Seattle, Detroit, and Denver, who all had less-than-impressive seasons under first-year head men. Instead of acting too quickly and getting a guy you’re not 100 percent sold on, it could make sense to wait and buy time until more desirable candidates are in the market.
In just four seasons at Oakland, Gruden led the Raiders to a pair of AFC West titles and an AFC championship game, where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens. Gruden then moved to Tampa Bay, where he brought home three NFC South titles in seven seasons, including a Super Bowl win. If Gruden does decide to return to coaching in 2011, all of the aforementioned teams would likely see their NFL odds of winning a Super Bowl improve.
