Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles NFL Odds, Line, & Spread
Last week the Dallas Cowboys gave the Philadelphia Eagles an golden opportunity. Dallas lost to the Ravens on Saturday night, opening the door for the Eagles to win-out and reach the playoffs. Philly couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity, however, losing 3-10 to the Redskins. Now Philadelphia needs a win plus losses by the Tampa Bay Bucs and the Bears or the Vikings. The Cowboys’ playoff scenario is much more simple. If they beat the Eagles on Sunday, they are in the playoffs. It won’t be easy for Dallas, the Eagles are 14-5 against the spread when revenging a road loss under head coach Andy Reid. Oddsmakers have the Eagles favored by 1.5 over the Cowboys with the over/under set at 43 points.
It’s been a wild ride this year for the Dallas Cowboys’ fans. One week their offense looks unstoppable, the next week they can’t pick up a first down to save their lives. As much as a roller coaster ride as it has been, Dallas has still played well more often than they’ve played poorly and their overall offensive statistics stack up well to the rest of the league. They rank 9th in the NFL in total offense with 347.6 yards per game and 14th in the league in points scored per game at 23.7. Tony Romo leads the NFL’s 8th-best passing attack, but Dallas has not committed to a running game this year, mostly due to recurring injuries to starting running back, Marion Barber. The Cowboys currently rank 22nd in rush attempts and 19th in total rushing yards per game.
If you throw out last week’s embarrassing 24-33 loss to the Ravens, the Dallas defense has made some major improvements over the last month. Even with the Baltimore game, the Cowboys have only given up an average of 17 points per game over their last 6 contests. The Cowboys are 8th in the NFL in total yards allowed on defense this year with 293.7. Dallas has one of the best secondaries in the league, allowing just 189.1 pass yards per game. This week they’ll match up against a Philadelphia offense that has been thriving at home this season. The Cowboys are 1.5 point underdogs at Philly this week.
On offense the Eagles have been impressive this season. They are scoring 24.8 points per game, 10th-best in the NFL and have racked up just over 350 yards per game. Since an embarrassing showing at Baltimore about a month ago, the Eagles, Donovan McNabb in particular, had really started to elevate their game. After beating the Cardinals, Giants, and Browns in consecutive weeks, Philly suffered a huge letdown against Washington, a game in which the offense scored just 3 points. That performance may have cost the Eagles a playoff birth, but they will have a chance for a little bit of redemption this week against Dallas.
Philadelphia’s 6th-ranked defense has been a major source of strength for the team this year. They are holding their opponents to just 273 total yards per game, 3rd-best in the league. This unit includes the league’s second-best pass defense with Philly’s secondary holding opponents to only 180 passing yards per game. They’ll need every bit of that defense this week against a Cowboy team that loves to air it out. Bet the Eagles -1.5 this week.
There’s more at stake here for Dallas in this game, but the Eagles would love to spoil the Cowboy’s playoff hopes, not to mention score an outside chance of making the playoffs. Dallas has started to earn a reputation for buckling in December and will need to win in this spot to avoid having that stigma attached to them year after year. If this game is anything like the 41-37 game on Monday Night football in week 2, we should be in for a great game.
