Dallas Cowboys at Kansas City Chiefs NFL Week 5 Odds & Picks

Written by Jimmy Boyd

cowboys chiefs 10609The Dallas Cowboys head to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs this Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium in a Week 5 non-conference clash. The Cowboys fell to 2-2 with a disappointing loss at Denver in a game where they held a 10-0 lead. The Chiefs are yet to get in the win column, enduring their third double digit loss of the season to the New York Giants last week. These teams last met in 2005 with Dallas winning a shootout 31-28. NFL odds makers expect Dallas to bounce back strong this week, listing the Cowboys as an 8.5-point favorite with the total set at 42.5.

It will be important for Dallas to get right back in the win column this week after a disappointing loss to the Broncos. The 0-4 Chiefs will give Dallas that opportunity. Dallas has been at its best when it is running the football effectively, but the Broncos did not allow the Cowboys to run all over them. The Broncos held Dallas to just 74 yards rushing, the first time the Cowboys had been held under the century mark this season. In fact, Dallas gashed the Giants and the Panthers for over 200 yards rushing each of the previous two weeks. That could mean bad news for a Chiefs defense that gave up 156 yards on the ground to the Giants last week.

While Dallas’ running game struggled at Denver, Tony Romo just wasn’t good enough to get Dallas the win. He finished 25 of 42 for 255 yards and one interception for a passer rating of 67.1. And he was sacked five times. Without Terrell Owens around to be Romo’s scapegoat, it’s time for the QB of America’s Team to start performing under pressure.

Defensively, Dallas played pretty well against Denver, allowing only 337 net yards of offense. The Cowboys were even able to sack Broncos QB Kyle Orton three times. Last Sunday’s loss falls on an offense that was in effective in the second half. It is worth noting that the Cowboys are 4-0 against the spread in their last four games after scoring less than 15 points in their previous game. It is also worth noting that the Chiefs are 0-5 against the number in their last five games as an underdog. If you like Dallas to bounce back with a big win and cover, bet the Cowboys at -8.5 at BetUS.

The Chiefs have now lost 27 of their last 29 games. Kansas City has been trounced by double digits in three of its four losses and it has been severely dominated each of the last two weeks by a pair of NFC East teams. This week it tries to break through against one of the NFL’s toughest divisions. In Week 3, the Eagles held the Chiefs to only 196 yards of offense and last week, the Giants held them to just 193 total yards. Those are some embarrassing offensive numbers.

If Kansas City wants to compete this week, it is going to have to start sustaining some drives to keep the defense off the field and to put some pressure on the opposing defense. Against Philly, the Chiefs were 0 of 11 on third down and they were just 2 of 15 last week against the Giants.

Kansas City’s offensive line is in rebuilding mode and it is apparent that the Chiefs won’t be able to run the football against quality defensive fronts. Matt Cassel is under all kinds of pressure in the passing game as well, but I strongly believe that the Chiefs are going to have to take to the air to move the football. The Patriots did not run the ball very well last season and Cassel was able to make big plays through the air in leading them to 11 wins. I know Kansas City is not nearly the team that New England is, but I believe Cassel has what it takes to make plays if the line can do a little bit better job of protecting him. Passing certainly seems to be the key to victory this week as the Cowboys haven’t defended the pass particularly well. In fact, Kansas City is 9-1 against the spread versus teams allowing a completion rate of 64 percent or more over the last three seasons. If you think Kansas City can keep this one within the number, bet the Chiefs at +8.5 at BetUS.
