Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles NFL Week 9 Odds & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on November 6, 2009

The 5-2 Cowboys meet the 5-2 Eagles in Philadelphia on NBC’s Sunday Night Football in a Week 9 NFC East showdown with first place on the line. Last week, Philly conquered the Giants 40-17 to move into a tie for first, and now it will be after sole possession. Meanwhile, the Cowboys dominated Seattle 38-17 to set up this battle for first place. These two division rivals last met in Week 17 of last season with Philly dominating Dallas 44-6 to take the NFC’s final playoff spot. Dallas owns a 55-44 lead in the all-time series, but lately the Eagles have had the edge, winning four of the last six meetings. NFL odds makers like Philly to get the job done, listing the Eagles as a 3-point favorite with the total set at 48.5.

Tony Romo is quickly becoming known as Mr. November with 12 straight wins in the month. If he is to make it 13 in a row, he will likely need some help from his good buddy Jason Witten. Witten is Dallas’ second-leading receiver with 37 catches for 348 yards on the season. The Eagles’ defense has played pretty good this season but matching up against tight ends has been an issue. We’ve seen Kellen Winslow, Zach Miller, and Fred Davis all pose problems for the Eagles. Witten is better than all these guys in my opinion, and the opinion of most. He could be poised for his biggest game of the year. And if that is the case, the Cowboys could have their revenge.

You can count on the Eagles coming after Tony Romo as they possess one of the most aggressive defensive units in the league. But Dallas needs to get some heat on Donovan McNabb as well. That’s where DeMarcus Ware comes in. The speed rusher’s 39 sacks are the second highest total in the NFL since 2007. It is worth noting that the underdog is 7-2 ATS in the last 9 meetings in this matchup. If you like this trend to continue, bet the Cowboys at +3 at BetUS.

Eagles QB Donovan McNabb has been a Cowboy killer. The All-Pro signal caller has won 11 of his last 16 starts against Dallas. While I believe Witten is the key for the Cowboys, I believe deep threat DeSean Jackson will be the key to helping McNabb continue his reign over Dallas. Jackson is quickly becoming the Eagles’ go-to guy. He has 24 grabs for 501 yards, averaging a ridiculous 20.9 yards per catch. Jackson is also a game-breaker as a return man. In all, he has six touchdowns this season and they have all been plays of at least 50 yards. He is a guy that must be paid attention to at all times and his big play ability helps free up many of the other things Philly does offensively.

Defensively, if Philly can get consistent heat on Romo, it just may be Asante Samuel time. Samuel’s 28 interceptions are the most in the NFL since 2005. Romo, is like a younger Favre in that he believe he can make any play at any time and it often gets him into trouble. Don’t be surprised if Samuel comes up with a pick Sunday night. It is worth noting that the Eagles are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games as a home favorite. If you like Philadelphia to roll again this week, bet the Eagles at -3 at BetUS.
