Dallas Cowboys at Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL Odds & Picks

Written by Jimmy Boyd

boys bucs 91009The Dallas Cowboys meet the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. EST at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Florida. Both teams squandered excellent opportunities to play postseason football a season ago and they will each start their quest to get back to the playoffs this week. Dallas is thought to be a contender in the NFC East while the Bucs are considered to be entering a rebuilding phase. These two teams last met in Week 8 a season ago with the Cowboys winning an ugly football game 13-9. That win improved Dallas to 8-3 against Tampa Bay all-time. NFL odds makers have listed the Dallas Cowboys as 6-point road favorites with the total set at 39.

While Cowboys QB Tony Romo’s struggles late in the season are well documented, the guy has been brilliant in September the past two seasons. Maybe there’s just something about being America’s Team on opening day as the Cowboy’s are an NFL-best 33-15-1 all-time in Week 1 action. The play of Tony Romo will be key to Dallas’ success this season and he will have no excuses now that Terrell Owens is no longer around to serve as a distraction. The question on my mind is if the Cowboys will actually miss Owens. I know he’s no one’s favorite teammate and can lead a media circus with the best of them, but he was always a pretty darn good football player on Sunday’s between the white lines. I don’t really see how getting rid of him is going to vault the Cowboys back on top of the NFC. After all he was on the 2007 team that rolled through the regular season.

I will also be interested in watching Jason Garrett call the plays. Garrett was on fire in 2007 with his play calling when the Boys went 13-3, but you didn’t here nearly as much about him last season when Dallas was struggling at times. If you like Dallas to live up to its title as the NFL’s best opening day team and cover the number in the process, bet the Cowboys at -6 at BetUS.

It may be a rebuilding year for the Bucs, but you can expect them to be pumped up to play the Cowboys in their home opener. Byron Leftwich has won the starting job, but it will be interesting to see if head coach Raheem Morris brings in rookie Josh Freeman at some point. He most definitely will if Leftwich doesn’t play well as he has proven to have a quick trigger. He wasn’t impressed with offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski and gave him the boot at the end of the preseason. If Leftwich plays well, the Bucs could have a shot in this game as Dallas’ secondary is far from untouchable. Plus, it is also more than worth noting that the home team is 5-0 against the spread in the last five meetings and the Buccaneers are an impressive 10-1 against the spread in their last 11 games as a home underdog of 3.5-10.0. If you think Tampa Bay can keep this one tight at home, bet the Bucs at +6 at BetUS.
