The Cowboys tore through the NFC this year and in large part it was do to the success of second year starter Tony Romo. Romo threw for 4,211 yards on 335-for-520 (64.4%) passing. That was good for 36 touchdowns to only 19 interceptions and a passer rating of 97.4. It seems surprising since he was such a big unknown after his late season collapse in 2006 and the botched snap that knocked the Cowboys out of the playoffs a year ago.
When it comes to running the football Dallas has two players that would start for a lot of teams in the league. Marion Barber may not be the starter but he carries the bulk of the load with 204 attempts gaining 975 yards for a 4.8 ypc average. He rolled into the end zone ten times and is an under-rated back. The opposition also had to worry about Julius Jones who ran for 588 yards on 164 carries, and while his 3.6 ypc isn’t very impressive, he did a good job of wearing down opponents for Barber to take advantage of.
Romo had plenty of weapons to take advantage of this year with Terrell Owens leading the way. This guy proved that he still has what it takes to be listed among the NFL’s elite receivers as he grabbed 81 passes for 1,355 yards and 15 touchdowns. Patrick Crayton provided a nice second option at wideout with 50 catches for 697 yards and seven scores, but tight end Jason Witten was a picture of consistency as he had 96 recpetions for 1,145 yards and seven scores. Barber is also a threat out of the backfield.
Wade Phillips did a good job getting the defense to play freely this year and Roy Williams and DeMarcus Ware benefited by making a lot of plays. They managed 46 sacks, but did give up over 20 points per game, which has to cause bettors a little bit of a concern. Home field advantage though and that big win earlier in the year over Green Bay has to give Cowboys fans confidence in their squad.
