Denver Broncos at Baltimore Ravens NFL Odds & Picks

Written by Jimmy Boyd

broncos ravens 102809The 6-0 Denver Broncos put their undefeated season on the line this Sunday when they visit the 3-3 Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium. Both teams should be fresh and well prepared for this contest following a bye week. These teams last met in the 2006 season with the Broncos defeating the Ravens 13-3 in a defensive battle. These teams have split six regular season meetings but the Ravens won the only playoff meeting to take a 4-3 lead in the all-time series. NFL odds makers are expecting a good one this week, listing the Baltimore Ravens as a slight 3-point favorite with the total set at 42.

Denver could be on the brink of a special season as it looks to start a season 7-0 for the first time since 1998. What makes it even more special is the fact that no one saw it coming under a rookie head coach who traded away the franchise QB. History says that Denver’s chances of staying undefeated are quite good when you consider that it is 15-5 all-time following a bye week.

The biggest reason for Denver’s quick turnaround is its much improved defensive play, and more specifically its pass rush. The Bronco defense really struggled in Mike Shanahan’s last few seasons but it currently ranks first in the AFC. Elvis Dumervil is a big reason why. He has lived in the backfield of his opponents and leads the entire league with 10 sacks. The Ravens’ offensive line has been porous at times the last three games, allowing seven total sacks in those contests. It is no coincidence that the Ravens have lost all three of those games. If Dumervil can get to Ravens QB Joe Flacco with regularity, you have to like Denver’s chances. It is worth noting that the Broncos are 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games following a bye week. If you like Denver to remain undefeated, bet the Broncos at +3 at BetUS.

I believe Baltimore’s key to winning this game also lies on the defensive side of the football. Last season, Baltimore boasted one of the best defenses in the league, but it has been torched for over 400 yards in each of its last two games. After back-to-back games of allowing the Bengals and the Vikings to run wild, I expect the Ravens to do a much better job against the run this week. Broncos QB Kyle Orton had done a good job of managing the game this season, but the Ravens will undoubtedly make him beat them. They have great speed on the defense and Ed Reed will be stalking him throughout the game. Reed is no doubt one of the best in the business as suckering QB’s into gift wrapping an interception for him. His 45 picks since 2002 are the most in the NFL during that span. Reed already has two interceptions this year and Orton has not played nearly as good on the road in his career. If Baltimore can win the turnover battle, they just might be able to end their three-game skid. It is worth noting that the Ravens are 9-3 against the spread in their last 12 home games. If you like Baltimore to get back in the win column, bet the Ravens at -3 at BetUS.
