Denver Broncos at San Diego Chargers NFL Week 6 Odds & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd

broncos chargers 101509The 5-0 Denver Broncos head to Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California to take on the 2-2 Chargers in a Week 6 AFC West Division showdown on ESPN’s Monday Night Football. Last week, Denver used a strong second half to eventually defeat New England 20-17 in overtime to remain undefeated. San Diego is coming off a bye week. These two division rivals last met in Week 17 of last season with San Diego winning 52-21 to capture the AFC West title. San Diego has now won five of the last six meetings, but it trails in the all-time series 53-44-1. NFL odds makers have listed the San Diego Chargers as a 3-point favorite with the total set at 44 Monday night.

Broncos QB Kyle Orton certainly doesn’t get much ink referring to him as one of the NFL’s elite signal callers, but his 26-12 record as a starter can’t be ignored. His career record as a starter might look down right gaudy by season’s end if he continues to develop chemistry with star wide receiver Brandon Marshall. Head coach Josh McDaniels sent QB Jay Cutler to the Bears, but he wasn’t about to let his differences with his star wideout end in Marshall’s departure. The two seem to be getting along just fine right now and why shouldn’t they be? Marshall has exploded for 222 yards and four touchdowns on 17 catches the last three weeks. Chargers cornerback Antonio Cromartie said this offseason that Marshall is the toughest receiver in the NFL to cover. Cromartie will have to prove himself wrong or it could be a long night for the Chargers.

Denver’s defense has been a pleasant surprise this season and I’m going to give some of the credit to the veteran leadership of Brian Dawkins. Wasn’t this guy’s career supposed to be over? Dawkins is playing well enough to make the Eagles wish they hadn’t released him. He will face a stiff task this week against Philip Rivers and the San Diego offense as the Chargers have shown in the past that they like to attack safeties down the field. It is worth noting that the Broncos are a perfect 5-0 against the spread this season. If you like the Denver covering machine to keep fattening the wallets of its backers, bet the Broncos at +3 at BetUS.

It’s hard to bet against Chargers QB Philip Rivers on the Monday Night Football stage when you consider that he is 4-0 when playing on Monday nights in his career with a passer rating of 106.9. With playmakers like Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates, who are averaging a ridiculous 18.7 and 14.5 yards per catch respectively, at his disposal, I expect the Chargers to challenge the Denver defense like no other team has this season. The key will be if San Diego can perform well enough defensively to hand the Broncos their first loss of the year.

Perhaps no player will be more vital to San Diego’s chances this week than outside linebacker Shawne Merriman. Merriman did not appreciate general manager A.J. Smith’s criticism of the team to say the least and now he has a chance to go out there and take out his anger on the Broncos. Merriman has not looked like his Pro Bowl self since returning from a knee injury this season. He has only eight stops and zero sacks in four games. Orton is not a very mobile QB and if Merriman can mount the type of rush off the edge we are used to seeing from him, the Chargers may be able to knock off the Broncos. It is worth noting that the Chargers are 5-0-1 against the spread in their last six meetings with Denver. If you like San Diego to spoil Denver’s perfect season Monday night, bet the Chargers at -3 at BetUS.
