Miami Dolphins at New York Jets Odds

Written by -

We’re about to find out if burying the game ball from last week’s 45-3 loss to New England will help the New York Jets bury the Miami Dolphins Sunday. NFL odds makers have given New York the edge, listing the Jets as 5-point favorites with the total set at 39.5.

The symbolism behind burying a football may not be enough to help the Jets recover from such a blow to their collective ego. New York had a chance to put itself in the driver’s seat for an AFC East title and home-field throughout the playoffs, but Tom Brady and company had other ideas.

The Jets will have to find a way to pick themselves up in a a hurry as dates with division leaders Pittsburgh and Chicago are up next. They can start with Miami.

The Jets racked up 402 total yards in a 31-23 win at Miami back in Week 3. Quarterback Mark Sanchez completed 15 of 28 passes for 256 yards with three touchdowns in the victory. He has had a lot of success against the Dolphins thus far in his career, throwing six touchdown strikes with no picks in three games.

Sanchez completed just 17 of 33 passes for 164 yards with three interceptions against the Patriots. It all added up to a brutal passer rating of 27.8 – his lowest of the season.

While Sanchez has performed well against Miami the past two seasons, he doesn’t figure to get anything easy Sunday. The Dolphins have only allowed 186.0 yards per game through the air in their last six games while picking off five passes.

If the Jets are able to notch their 10th win of the season, it would mark the first time they have posted double-digit wins in the regular season since 2006. A win this week would also go a long way toward ending Miami’s slim playoff hopes. The 6-6 Dolphins are in danger of missing the postseason for the eighth time in nine seasons.

Many team struggle when taking the field with a short week of preparation but New York has thrived in the role. In fact, the Jets are 12-3-1 against the spread in their last 16 games when playing on Sunday following a Monday night game.

Heading into the season, most would have considered New York to have the best secondary in the league. Allowing Brady to complete 21 of 29 passes for 326 yards with four touchdowns may have changed the opinion of some.

As if the blow Brady delivered wasn’t bad enough, a season-ending injury to safety Jim Leonhard dealt the Jets another one.

Miami quarterback Chad Henne could be poised for a big day against this banged-up New York secondary as well. After all, he lit up the Jets for a career-high 363 passing yards in the season’s first meeting.

Like Sanchez, however, he’ll have to shake off a poor performance last week. Henne was picked off three times in last Sunday’s 13-10 loss to Cleveland. Henne has thrown 15 picks on the season compared to 12 touchdowns.  He has also only led Miami to 215 total points this season – worst in the AFC.

It is worth noting that the Dolphins are an impressive 13-3 against the number in their last 16 games as a road underdog.
