Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots Spread

Written by Jimmy Boyd on December 19, 2011

The New England Patriots (11-3) will be going after a sixth straight win when they host the Miami Dolphins (5-9) Saturday.

Odds makers don’t expect the Patriots to have much trouble keeping their winning streak alive, listing them as a 10-point favorite with the total set at 48.

New England extended its winning streak Sunday with a 41-23 victory, ending Denver’s six-game run.

Tom Brady connected on 23 of 34 pass attempts for 320 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. One touchdown toss went to tight end Aaron Hernandez, who led the team with nine receptions and 129 receiving yards.

Chad Ochocinco, who we haven’t heard much from this season, hauled in the other touchdown pass.

Brady, BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead all rushed for scores, and Stevan Ridley led the team with 65 rushing yards on 11 carries.

Sunday’s 30-23 victory over the Buffalo Bills was the fifth win in seven games for the Dolphins.

Matt Moore completed 10 of 20 passes for 217 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Three completions, including one of the touchdown strikes, went to star wideout Brandon Marshall, who finished with a team-high 84 receiving yards.

Reggie Bush led the way on the ground with 203 of the team’s 254 rushing yards and a score. It will likely take another big game from Bush for Miami to pull off the upset Saturday.

Bush, who ranks sixth in the AFC with 973 rushing yards, is a big reason why the Dolphins rank seventh in the NFL with 127.4 rushing yards per game. He has averaged 135.3 rushing yards the last three weeks and could be poised for a big day against a New England defense ranked dead last in the NFL with 414.4 yards allowed per contest.

The Patriots have given up an average of 211 rushing yards in their last two games.

While the Pats try to slow down the Phins’ rushing attack, Miami will be trying to keep New England’s passing game under control. That is no easy task.

The Patriots are second in the NFL with 318.9 passing yards per game. Brady ranks second in passing yards (4,597) and third in touchdown passes (35) and passer rating (106.8).

Wes Welker leads the league with 1,384 receiving yards and Rob Gronkowski leads the NFL with 15 touchdown catches.

The Patriots have won the last three in this series with the most recent being a 38-24 win in Miami on Sept. 12. Brady passes for 517 yards with four touchdowns and one interception in that game.

In regard to the point spread, both teams have been quality investments recently. The Dolphins have covered the spread in seven of their last eight, and the Patriots are 4-1-1 against the numbers in their last six.

As far as the total is concerned, the Dolphins have played to the under in 11 of their last 13 while the Patriots have finished over the number in each of their last four.
