As dominant as both the Cowboys and the Eagles were in their openers, a win on Monday night would be considered much more impressive no matter how easy or difficult it comes. One of the NFL’s biggest rivalries becomes even more dynamic as Terrell Owens goes up against his former team, who he helped advance to the Super Bowl. Both teams will be trying to stake their claim as the one to beat in the East.
The Cowboys have received plenty of hype as the team to beat in the NFC following a 13-3 season last year, but the Eagles have garnered some attention as well with a healthy Donovan McNabb under center. Both teams appeared worthy of the consideration following week 1 blowouts.
Philly crushed the St. Louis Rams 38-3 and Dallas was just as impressive with a 28-10 win over the Cleveland Browns. Tony Romo was 24 of 32 for 320 yards and one touchdown. That touchdown pass was thrown to none other than T.O. who had five catches for 87 yards.
This will be Owens’ fifth game against his former team since their bitter breakup after the 2005 season. Owens has not bit his tongue in the least leading up to this matchup saying “The fans and just the excitement of me coming there and being there, it became too overwhelming for Donovan, I think at one point in time, I will say that we had a good relationship. I think I got too big for Philly, too big for him. I just feel like in a sense that he felt like I was just probably getting too much attention.”
Owens and Romo have both been held down in Philly’s last two visits to Dallas. Romo had a terrible 32.6 QB rating in those games and Owens accounted for just four catches and 60 yards. You could say that Philly is getting the better of this rivalry thus far. Bet the Cowboys at -7 at Bookmaker if you think they are ready to make a statement.
Philly’s run defense looked very dominant last week as it held three-time 1,000-yard rusher Steven Jackson to only 40 yards. Philly was seventh in the league against the run last season while Dallas ranked sixth so both teams may have to take to the air to move the football.
Brian Westbrook is a player the Eagles will need to come up big against the Cowboys. He is coming off a 91 yard performance with a touchdown in the season debut. He also had a touchdown catch against the Rams. McNabb looked like the MVP of the league last week, throwing for 361 yards and three touchdowns. The Eagles had three 1,000-yard receivers in that game (DeSean Jackson, Greg Lewis, and Hank Baskett). The Cowboys were able to hold down a respectable Browns passing attack last week, but they will have their work cut out for themselves against a healthy McNabb.
