Early Kentucky Derby Handicapping

Our early Kentucky Derby handicapping normally starts around the beginning of Spring, but every once in awhile we make exceptions that will lead us to profits.  You have to look for the horses that catch your eye.  There are horses that you know have a great pedigree who stay close to the pace but rally too soon, or get into some early trouble and still end up with a respectable showing.  If you see something like this then you know you are going to get great odds on betting them in the future, since they didn't even win the race they were currently running.  It's those geldings that get out there early and win often that you have to be wary of since you aren't going to be getting any kind of value on them.  If you get yourself three or four solid contenders then when race day comes along you will have quality underdogs to take, and if you throw them together in trifectas or exactas you will have a really good chance at hitting a big payday on the top day in horse racing.

This year one horse that has caught our eye is Court Vision.  This gelding ran on September 7th at Turfway Park in a six-furlong.  He started off terrible, but made his move from last to sixth from more than five lengths behind, then down the stretch made up another five lengths to finish second in the race.  This is the kind of horse that we like to keep tabs on, and finishing off 2007 he has been doing extremely well running on all kinds of different tracks and conditions.  He won the Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs towards the end of October, even though he was down more than four lengths down the stretch.  At Aqueduct at the end of November he ran in the $200,000 Remsen Stakes, and even though he trailed almost the entire race he came through once again down the stretch and scored by a neck.

Court Visions's trainer is Bill Mott, a hall of famer who has had limited success in the Derby.  His best showing was with Favorite Trick in 1998, when he finished 8th to Real Quiet.  Here are some other three-year-olds that we feel are worth watching: War Pass, Majestic Warrior, Pyro, Z Humor, Kodiak Cowboy, and Take of Ekati.  All of these geldings have had impressive showing early on and we will be watching them closely leading up to the first Saturday in May.
