2009 FBR Open Picks & Predictions

The PGA TOUR continues this week from beautiful Arizona, as the 2009 FBC Open is set to get underway this Thursday at TPC Scottsdale. Last week golfers ripped apart the course at the Bob Hope Classic, as Pat Perez picked up the first win of his career on TOUR, and will look to keep his excellent play rolling this week. While Perez comes in playing some great golf, the guy to keep your eye on is DJ Trahan, who won for the 2nd time in 3 years last year, after beating Phil Mickelson in a playoff. Mickelson will look for his 3rd career win here at Scottsdale, with the most recent coming back in 2005. To help you get a little better understanding of the field in play this weekend, we have broken down the golfers by the favorites, guys in the middle of the pack, and the long shots we think who have a shot at winning.
Favorites: Phil Mickelson +800, Anthony Kim +1200, Camilo Villegas +1500, and Geoff Ogilvy +1500
With Mickelson making his first start of the season, he better come ready to play as the rest of these guys have really played well to start the season. Villegas has a top 25 finish under his belt, and Ogilvy and Kim went one two at the Mercedes-Benz Championship to start the season, with Ogilvy taking home the trophy. We expect solid golf from each of these golfers, but to no surprise we are taking Mickelson as our pick to win the whole thing this weekend.
Middle of the Pack: Mike Weir +2000, Zach Johnson +2500, Steve Stricker +2500, Justin Leonard +2500, David Toms +2500, Kenny Perry +3000, and Rory Sabbatini +3000
There is a ton of talent left over in this field, as a number of rising golfers will try and continue to make their mark with Tiger Woods still nursing an injury. A number of these guys have had solid finishes already this season, including Weir and Stricker who both finished in a tie for 3rd last week at the Bob Hope Classic. The guy we think you need to keep a close eye on is Zach Johnson who started the season with a 6th place finish at the Mercedez-Benz Championship only to follow it up with a win the following week at the Sony Open. Johnson didn’t play last week, and what a start to the season it would be for the former Masters Champion if he is in the hunt on Sunday yet again.
Long Shots: Steward Cink +4000, Aaron Baddeley +4000, Chad Campbell +4000, JB Holmes +4000, Pat Perez +4000, Steve Marino +5000, DJ Trahan +6000, Ryuji Imada +6000, and Rocco Mediate +10000
This might be the most interesting group, as the 3 past winners are all considered long shots this weekend, as JB Holmes won this event last year and in 2006, while Aaron Baddeley won it in 2007. You also have last weeks winner Pat Perez in action again this week, and everyone is waiting for Marino to break in with his first win. We are also thinking maybe Rocco gets it going this weekend, as there will be a number of fans keeping a close eye to see if he plays well early. Our pick would be Holmes just based on the recent success he has had here in Scottsdale.
