Every time I have watched Omar Samhan play this season, I have thought to myself that he must be the slowest post player in the country. Well, that slow big man torched No. 2 seed Villanova for 32 points as the 10th-seed Gaels marched on to the Sweet 16.

“Nobody expected us to be in this situation when we started the year,” coach Randy Bennett said. “Maybe the guys did, but I think even they would admit we were a little unsure.”

The biggest reason why Villanova is heading home early is because All-American guard Scottie Reynolds just couldn’t get it going. He missed 9 of 11 shots and scored only eight points after missing 13 of 15 field goal attempts in Villanova’s first round game with Robert Morris.

“We understand the expectations were much higher for this team,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said.

Northern Iowa guard Ali Farokhmanesh, the hero of Thursday’s win over UNLV, had an encore performance against the Jayhawks. He nailed a clutch 3-pointer in the closing moments to seal the deal against the team many thought would cut down the nets this year.

Next up for the Panthers is the winner of the Michigan State/Maryland showdown. Northern Iowa will certainly be an underdog again against which ever team it faces, but with as good as the Panthers are defensively, one has to think they have a shot at continuing their Cinderella story.

One thing I noticed was that the Panthers did not handle the Kansas pressure very well late in the game. It makes me wonder if Kansas might have been able to survive had it come with the press sooner. I would expect Northern Iowa to see a lot more full court pressure in the second round.

I have a lot of respect for this Cornell team, but it does have some flaws. It’s biggest flaw is that it relies too heavily on the three-point shot. When they’re falling, the Big Red can beat more talented teams, but when they’re not, they are very vulnerable. Wisconsin is a team that defends the three-point shot well, only allowing its opponents to make 4 per game at just a 33.6% clip. Wisconsin is truly one of the best defensive teams in the nation, only allowing 56 ppg. This is very significant as Cornell is just 1-8 ATS versus good defensive teams, allowing 64 points per game or less, after 15+ games over the last 3 seasons. And this is a Wisconsin team which has been at its best against the best competition. Wiscy is 7-1 ATS when playing against a top-level team (Win Pct. > 80%) this season, winning these games by an average score of 69.6 to 61.8. The Badgers have wins over Maryland, Duke, Ohio State, Michigan State and Purdue, all by 4 or more points. I’ll lay the number here.

Cornell was one of the more impressive teams I saw in the first round with the way it was able to execute against one of the better defensive teams in the country. The one thing you have to be able to do when facing Cornell is defend the three-point line and the Owls did not. Cornell made nine three-point shots with Ryan Wittman leading the charge. Wittman made 4 of 6 from beyond the arc and 7 of 10 overall for 20 points.

Wisconsin has left plenty of room for improvement in round two with the way in played yesterday, but it certainly wasn’t the only higher seed that struggled in the first round. The Badgers only shot 37% from the field, including just 1 of 9 from three-point range. Wisconsin will not be able to shoot that poorly if it hopes to survive a very good No. 12 seed. Wisconsin star Trevon Hughes, who scored 19 points yesterday, does figure to be a handful for Cornell because of his quickness. Wisconsin’s size could give it an edge on the interior as well.

Many people felt Purdue could be primed for an upset without star forward Robbie Hummel, who was lost for the season with a knee injury, in the lineup, especially against a Siena team which has made some noise in the tourney in recent years. But the Boilermakers showed that they can still play some pretty good ball without him. JaJuan Johnson really stepped up, scoring 23 points and pulling down 15 boards.

There were even some out there that thought Utah State could give Texas A&M a challenge, but it’s hard to bet against a team that has now advanced to the second round each of the last five years. The Aggies got a big lift from freshman Khris Middleton, who scored 19 points on 7 of 10 shooting.

This matchup could prove to be the best of the second round. Odds makers are giving the slight edge to the lower seed here after such a dominant performance, and likely because they feel Hummel’s absence will show up more in this game.

Purdue will be trying to get to the Sweet 16 for a second straight season. Texas A&M was bounced in the round of 32 by UConn last year so it will be trying to move past that point this time around.

We cashed in with Washington in round one, and it is worth a small play again today. Led by Quincy Pondexter, the Huskies are on some kind of a role. They have won 8 straight and covered the spread in 7 of those. This is a very confident team right now, and I’m giving them the edge for heading into the Sweet 16. I can’t look past the fact that New Mexico is on a 2-11 ATS skid when playing away from home versus good offensive teams, scoring 77 or more points per game, after 15+ games, losing to these teams by an average score of 69.1 to 80.2. The Lobos are also just 2-9 ATS in their last 11 neutral site games and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Huskies are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games as a favorite of 6.5 or fewer points and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 NCAA Tournament games. Take Washington.

The Wildcats struggled down the stretch in the regular season and Big East conference tournament, losing five of their last seven, but most felt they would look to make a statement in this first round contest. I guess not.

While Villanova managed to survive, you knew something was off from the beginning when star guard Scottie Reynolds wasn’t in the starting lineup for undisclosed reasons. While Reynolds was clearly not on top of his game, shooting just 2 of 15 from the floor, he managed to get the job done at the free throw line down the stretch.

“He is a live-by-the-sword, die-by-the-sword kind of guy,” coach Jay Wright said. “And I’ll die by his sword any time because we’ve won so many. Even when he was missing them, I was saying, ‘If that’s how we’re going to go down, I’ll go down with him any time.”’

If Robert Morris could have found a way, it would have been just the fifth No. 15 seed to ever defeat a No. 2 seed.

Villanova will continue its run toward a second straight Final Four with a second round matchup against No. 10 seed Saint Mary’s up next.

While there was no doubting that Old Dominion would be a formidable foe for just about any opponent heading in, most felt Notre Dame would move on because of how well it was playing down the stretch. Notre Dame entered the game having won six of its last seven contests.

The win marked Old Dominion’s first in the NCAA tournament since defeating Villanova in triple overtime back in 1995.

“I think it reflects the magic of March, the way the two teams battled,” Old Dominion coach Blaine Taylor said. “One of the officials turns to me at the two-minute mark and said, ‘It’s been a heck of a game,’ and I really think it was.”

The story of the game was how poorly Notre Dame shot – 36 percent from the field. The story withing that story was that star forward Luke Harangody only shot 2 of 9 from the field and didn’t score his first points until 12.6 seconds remaining in the game.

Old Dominion will be looking to pull off another upset when it takes on 3-seed Baylor in the second round.
