The 5-2 defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers head to the Mile High City to take on the 6-1 Denver Broncos on ESPN’s Monday Night Football. The Steelers have won four straight and are coming off a bye week while the Broncos saw their undefeated season come to an end with a 30-7 loss in Baltimore last week. These two teams last met back in 2007 and it was a good one. The Broncos needed a 49-yard field goal from Jason Elam as time expired to defeat the Steelers 31-28. Denver has won four of the last five meetings and owns a 16-9-1 advantage in the all-time series. NFL odds makers have the Broncos going down for a second straight week, listing the Pittsburgh Steelers as the 3-point favorite with the total set at 39.5.

The big question we are all asking this week is how Denver will respond following its first defeat of the season. Will the Broncos now come back down to earth or can head coach Josh McDaniels keep his team believing? If they are ready to play Monday night, they should have a pretty darn good shot with QB Kyle Orton at the controls. Orton is 27-13 (.675) in his career as a starter. According to my research, that puts him only behind Tom Brady and his opponent Ben Roethlisberger for career winning percentage with a minimum of 25 starts. But when we look even closer, we see that Orton is a ridiculous 18-2 as a starter at home in his career. To put it in perspective, that’s the best mark in the NFL since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.

It’s hard to find many weaknesses on the Steelers, but one glaring weakness has been their special teams play. Pittsburgh has given up three touchdowns on special teams in the last four weeks. This means that Eddie Royal could play a big part in helping Denver earn a victory Monday. Royal just might be able to have a big day on returns to keep Denver with good field position.

Despite what you may have heard, Elvis is alive and well. I’m not talking about the king of rock and roll, I’m talking about the king of sacks. Denver’s Elvis Dumervil leads the AFC with 10 QB sacks. Roethlisberger’s high sack totals are well documented and Dumervil has the potential to make it a long day for Big Ben. It is worth noting that the Steelers are just 6-20-1 ATS in their last 27 games as a favorite of 3.0 points or less. I don’t know if it’s that extra day of preparation time or what, but Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is a perfect 4-0 on the Monday night stage. While teams have been able to do a good job of getting to Big Ben initially and shutting down his first reads, no one in the game is better at keeping plays alive and making something out of noting with his ability to shake tacklers and his dangerous pump fakes. If the Broncos don’t stay disciplined in their assignments throughout the entire play, Big Ben could have a huge day. It is worth noting that the Broncos are 7-17-1 ATS in their last 25 home games. Last week, Philly conquered the Giants 40-17 to move into a tie for first, and now it will be after sole possession. Meanwhile, the Cowboys dominated Seattle 38-17 to set up this battle for first place. These two division rivals last met in Week 17 of last season with Philly dominating Dallas 44-6 to take the NFC’s final playoff spot. Dallas owns a 55-44 lead in the all-time series, but lately the Eagles have had the edge, winning four of the last six meetings. NFL odds makers like Philly to get the job done, listing the Eagles as a 3-point favorite with the total set at 48.5.

Tony Romo is quickly becoming known as Mr. November with 12 straight wins in the month. If he is to make it 13 in a row, he will likely need some help from his good buddy Jason Witten. Romo, is like a younger Favre in that he believe he can make any play at any time and it often gets him into trouble. Don’t be surprised if Samuel comes up with a pick Sunday night. Last week, the Chargers got over the .500 mark with a 24-16 win over lowly Oakland while things got worse for the Giants, falling 40-17 to division rival Philly. These two teams haven’t met since the 2005 season when the Chargers cruised 45-23 behind a 192-yard performance from LaDainian Tomlinson. The Chargers have won two of the last three meetings but New York holds the 5-4 lead in the all-time series. There’s no question that Chargers QB Philip Rivers will have to play well to give his team a chance Sunday. Rivers has thrown 11 touchdown strikes in his last five games against the NFC and he’s probably licking his chops right about now. The New York secondary has been torched by the deep ball the last three weeks. With the Giants not getting as much pressure on the QB, the secondary is being exposed. Last week, Tennessee finally got the monkey off its back by picking up its first win of the season, a 30-13 rout of Jacksonville. The 49ers appeared poised to hand the Colts their first loss of the season, but they couldn’t hold on, falling 18-14. These two teams last met in the 2005 season with the Titans winning 33-22 behind a big day from the late Steve McNair. The 49ers have won two of the last three meetings and own a 7-4 lead in the all-time series. NFL lines makers don’t think the Titans can build on their first win of the season, listing the 49ers as a 4-point favorite with the total set at 41.

The 1-6 Detroit Lions take on the 2-5 Seattle Seahawks Sunday in a Week 9 NFC showdown. Last week, Detroit had no answer for running back Steven Jackson and fell to the Rams 17-10. Seattle was able to hang around with Dallas for a while, but when it was all said and done, the Cowboys had earned a decisive 38-17 win. These two teams have not faced off since the 2006 season when the Seahawks defeated the Lions 9-6 in an ugly game. The Lions have won three of the last five meetings but Seattle owns the 6-4 advantage in the all-time series. NFL odds makers are giving Seattle the nod this week, listing the Seahawks as a 10-point favorite with the total set at 43.

All the progress that Lions QB Matthew Stafford had made early in the season appeared to be lost last week. In his first game back from a knee injury, the first overall draft pick struggled, completing just 14 of 33 passes for 168 and an interception. In all, his performance translated into a QB rating of 46.0. And Lions fans, who haven’t had a winner in so long, let the rookie have it. Stafford is on the road this week so he won’t have to worry about the crowd turning on him. Interestingly enough, the Lions may either get some closure or they may be kicking themselves following Sunday’s contest. Teams are beginning to utilize their tights more and more in the receiving game and I think Seattle needs to make getting Carlson the ball a priority. The 3-4 Carolina Panthers will be looking to hand the 7-0 Saints their first loss of the season when the two division rivals meet in New Orleans Sunday. Last week, the Panthers earned a little revenge by defeating the Arizona Cardinals, who knocked them out of last year’s playoffs, 34-21. Meanwhile, the Saints stayed unbeaten with a 35-27 win over the Falcons on Monday Night Football. These team’s last met in Week 17 of last season with the Panthers edging past the Saints 33-31 behind a big 178-yard rushing day from DeAngelo Williams. This series has been all Carolina in recent years with the Panthers winning six of the last seven meetings. Panthers QB Jake Delhomme started his career in New Orleans and he has been sticking it to his former team ever since he left. In fact, Delhomme is 8-2 against the Saints in his career. For him to improve on that mark, he won’t have to have a big game, but star running back DeAngelo Williams will. In fact, the Panthers are a perfect 10-0 when he rushes for at least 110 yards. Williams had a big day against the Saints the last time these two teams faced off and he could be poised to do so again. It’s no secret that New Orleans’ defense is improved, but we all saw the way Atlanta was able to run the football on the Saints last week. Plus, big defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis is expected to miss Sunday’s game with an injury. That means that there could be some nice holes for Williams and Jonathan Stewart. The key for Carolina will be to not get behind early as so many other teams have against the Saints. When you fall behind you have to pass the football to play catch up and that falls right into the hands of the Saints.

Julius Peppers has been a big reason for Carolina’s turnaround. Since Week 5, he has six sacks, two forced fumbles, and an interception return for score. He’ll try to disrupt Drew Brees and the Saints offense this week. The Kansas City Chiefs take on the Jacksonville Jaguars this Sunday at Municipal Stadium in a Week 9 AFC clash. The Chiefs should be ready this week as they are coming off a bye while the Jags should be hungry after becoming the first team to lose to the Titans. These teams last met in the 2007 season with the Jags winning 17-7. The win improved Jacksonville to 5-2 in the all-time series. The books have predicted that Jacksonville will continue its winning ways over the Chiefs, listing the Jaguars as 6-point favorites with the total set at 42.

When the Jags defeated the Chiefs back in 2007, they outrushed them 156 to 10. A strong ground attack led by Maurice Jones-Drew figures to be the key to victory again Sunday. Jones-Drew is without question the best playmaker on Jacksonville’s squad, and that’s why coach Jack Del Rio has to make sure he gets more touches. I mean, the guy has 50 touchdowns in 53 career games. That’s truly incredible. Last week he broke off 79 and 80-yard scoring runs, but he only got eight total totes for the game. In fact, he has received 15 or fewer carries four times this season. When you’ve got a horse like Jones-Drew, you have to ride him. Expect the Jags to get that figured out this week as they take on a Chiefs defense ranked 26th against the run.

Defensively, the Jags have got to start showing some more fire. They rank in the bottom third of the league in total defense (No. 24) and they haven’t been able to help the offense out with any big game-changing plays. The Jags are dead last in the league with only five sacks thus far on the season. They also rank near the bottom in interceptions and fumbles forced. Kansas City is certainly not immune to coughing up the football so making some big defensive plays this week could go a long way in securing the win. Chiefs QB Matt Cassel is 7-3 in his career as a starter on the road. Now those are some pretty good numbers and he just might be able to improve on them if Jacksonville gives him all day to pick them apart as they have everyone else. Cassel will be looking at his favorite target, Dwayne Bowe early and often Sunday. Bowe has 23 catches on the season and is averaging 13.1 yards per catch. He has four touchdowns on the season but has picked up the pace lately with two in the last three games.

Of course, Kansas City is going to need to pose a running threat to keep Jacksonville honest. The Jags will definitely place more of an emphasis on stopping the run this week after getting gashed for 228 yards by Chris Johnson. Kansas City may be able to find some success on the ground as well with an inspired effort by Jamaal Charles. Larry Johnson is out serving a suspension, making this Charles’ time to shine. It is worth noting that the Jaguars are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 games as a home favorite. Last week, the Ravens ended their three-game skid with an impressive 30-7 victory over the then-undefeated Denver Broncos. Cincinnati was idle. These teams last met a few short weeks ago in Week 5 with the Bengals coming from behind to win 17-14 on a late touchdown drive. The win was the seventh in the last 10 meetings for the Bengals. NFL odds makers believe Baltimore will have its revenge this week, however, listing the Ravens as 3-point favorites with the total set at 43.5.

Carson Palmer is 7-3 in his career against Baltimore, but for him to improve on this mark, it will likely have more to do with Cedric Benson’s performance than his own. Benson has been sensational this season, rushing for 720 yards, on a 4.4 yards per carry average, and four touchdowns. In the first meeting against the Ravens, Benson became the first player to break the century mark against them since 2006.
