The Hoyas came into their game against Pitt as 3.5 home favorites, but were quickly dismantled by the undefeated Panthers, 70-54. The loss marked the end of a 7 game winning-streak for Georgetown, who slipped to 10-2 overall and 1-1 in Big East Play. The Hoyas were riding high after a monster upset over UConn just a week ago, but they could not makes any shots and were dominated on the glass by Pitt on Saturday.

Notre Dame came into St. John’s as a 8.5 point road favorite, but weren’t able to find their offense, shooting just 43.5 percent from the field and a dismal 23.5 percent from three-point range. Much like the Hoyas, the Irish were also dominated on the boards Saturday, grabbing 13 less defensive rebounds than the Red Storm.

When it comes to the major strength of the team, defense is the name of the game for Georgetown. The Hoyas allow just 57.4 points per game on 35.6 percent shooting. It’s obvious that this stingy defense didn’t live up to it’s potential against Pitt on Saturday, but this is a group that should regroup well and continue to smother opponents. Offensively the Hoyas are putting up 74 points per game, but, as you can see from Saturday’s performance against Pitt, they can certainly be slowed down considerably with by a strong defensive unit.

Offensively the Irish have been considerably better than the Hoyas, scoring 82.5 points per game, but Notre Dame’s losses haven’t been due to a lack of scoring, it’s been problems on on the boards. As I previously mentioned, the Irish were out-rebounded by 13 on the defensive glass their last time out.

I expect this to be a fairly close game for the most part, but I’ll take the Irish as a small favorite. Luke Harangody and Kyle McAlarney present problems on both ends of the court for the Hoyas, plus Georgetown should have a rough time in front of the Notre Dame faithful tonight.

Baltimore Ravens 16, Tennessee Titans 19 - the Titans are 3-point favorites with the total set at 34.5. The Titans won by three points on the road against the Ravens back on October 5th and the odds makers have Tennessee winning by a field goal again. While Tennessee is the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC, it comes in having lost two of its last three games, but can likely rest a little easier knowing that the Colts, which handed the Titans a 23-0 Week 17 defeat, are already out of the picture. The Ravens defense was great in the Wild Card round and I expect it to be solid again. Pulling off the upset will likely depend on how good rookie QB Joe Flacco is in the game.

Arizona Cardinals 19, Carolina Panthers 29 - the Panthers are 10-point favorites with the total set at 48.5. Despite a big Wild Card win over a hot Falcons team, the Cardinals find themselves double digit dogs on the road where they are just 3-5 this season. Carolina is a perfect 8-0 at home, but it did allow the Cards to play them to a 4-point game back on October 26th. Odds makers are confident that the Cards will be done in the divisional round.

Philadelphia Eagles 18, New York Giants 22 - the Giants are 4-point favorites with the total set at 40. This is the most intriguing matchup of the weekend to me with the defending Super Bowl champs taking the field for the first time in the 2009 postseason against a team that just beat them in New York 20-14 on December 7th. Odds makers have the G-Men getting their revenge but they are anticipating another close game. It would appear that the winner of this one has a great shot at making it to the Super Bowl.

San Diego Chargers 16, Pittsburgh Steelers 22 - the Steelers are 6-point favorites with the total set at 38. The San Diego Chargers have done the unthinkable. They were down three games in the AFC West with three to go and ended up winner their division. They went on to knock off the red hot Indianapolis Colts in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. But now they must venture out on the road where they are just 3-5 this season and odds makers have them coming up short. Pittsburgh won the regular season meeting 11-10 at home to beat the Chargers for the fifth time in its last six games at home.

For the third straight season, the BCS championship matchup is not without some controversy, but you will get no complaints from me as the Florida versus Oklahoma BCS title game should be one of the better showdowns we’ve seen in a while. We have the past two Heisman Trophy winners leading their respective squads into battle on January 8th at Dolphin Stadium in Miami. Football odds makers have listed the Florida Gators as 3.5-point favorites with the total set at 70.

There is no question in my mind that these two sides are deserving of playing in this contest. 12-1 and No. 2 ranked Oklahoma scored at least 58 points in each of its last six games, winning by 33.3 ppg during that stretch. OU closed out the year with seven straight wins, including a convincing 65-21 drubbing on then-unbeaten and No. 2 ranked Texas Tech.

No. 1 ranked Florida is also 12-1 and enters this contests with nine straight wins, including a victory over then-undefeated and No. 1 ranked Alabama in the SEC title game. That win gives Urban Meyer and the Gators an opportunity to play for the national title for the second time in three seasons.

Oklahoma head man, Bob Stoops, is going after his second national championship. He collected his first back in 2001 when he defeated Florida State in the Orange Bowl. He has taken his team to two BCS championship games since and neither of those turned out as fortunately. The Sooners were pounded 55-19 by Southern California in the Orange Bowl in 2005 and fell 21-14 to LSU in the 2004 Sugar Bowl.

Urban Meyer took Florida to a national championship two seasons ago with a lopsided win over Ohio State.

Oklahoma has looked next to unstoppable since going down to the Texas Longhorns. QB Sam Bradford led the country with 48 touchdown strikes while throwing only six touchdown passes. He also led the nation with a 186.3 QB efficiency rating and was second in the land with 4,464 passing yards. He spread the ball around to six OU receiver with at least 395 yards but you can count on Juaquin Iglesias and Jermain Gresham as being his go-to guys in this game.

One big question for OU coming into this one is if they will still be able to run the football without running back DeMarco Murray. Murray ran for 1,002 yards and 14 touchdowns, and had 395 receiving yards and four TDs. But OU still has leading rusher Chris Brown to turn to. He racked up over 1,100 yards and 20 scored on the ground. The balanced OU offense set NCAA records with 97 touchdowns and 702 points. If you think this high powered offense can win the BCS title, bet Oklahoma at +3.5 at Bookmaker and receive a 20% cash sign up bonus.

Florida has a high powered attack of its own and is led by, perhaps, the best player in college football. This year Tebow became just the second player to repeat as Maxwell Award winner given to the most outstanding collegiate player. He wasn’t able to repeat as the Heisman Trophy winner but he put together another remarkable season, throwing for 2,515 yards, 28 touchdowns and just two interceptions to go with a 176.7 rating. He also rushed for 682 yards and added 12 more scores on the ground. Tebow was at his best in the SEC title game as the Gators won by 11 points over Bama without star wideout Percy Harvin. Harvin rushed for 543 yards and added 595 receiving yards and 16 total touchdowns this season. The Gators will have the explosive Harvin back on the field for this game.

What could end up being the deciding factor is which team ends up playing better defensively. The speedy Gators defense was fifth in the country with 12.8 points allowed per game, second with 24 interceptions and tied for eighth with 279.3 yards a contest. OU gave up 24.5 points and 359.1 yards per game. If you like the Gators to win their second national title in three seasons, bet Florida -3.5 at Bookmaker.

23rd ranked Ball State was one win away from a perfect regular season and a MAC title, but it was brutally upset by Buffalo in the MAC title game. Now, the Cards find themselves as underdogs to Tulsa in the GMAC Bowl. NCAA football odds makers have listed Tulsa as the 2.5-point favorite with the total set at 75.

Ball State head coach Brady Hoke has wasted no time moving on after getting the Cardinals program on solid footing. Hoke is 34-38 in six seasons with Ball State, but after a 12-1 campaign, he has decided to take the job at San Diego State. After excepting the job, he has also decided not to coach the Cardinals in their second straight bowl game. Offensive coordinator Steve Parrish will be call the shots in the game after signing a four-year contract last month to take over as head man.

Ball State’s offense is led by QB Nate Davis, who receive Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors. Davis is on the draft list of several NFL teams but is yet to announce if he will turn pro or return for his senior season. After his worst performance of the season in a 42-24 loss to Buffalo in the MAC title game, Davis seemed to say that he would be back and that coming back was his plan all along. That could quickly change as NFL teams throw their money at him. Davis is projected to be a first or second round pick. Davis threw for 26 touchdowns against just seven interceptions this season. He racked up 3,446 yards through the air. If you like Davis to lead the Cardinals to a GMAC Bowl victory, bet Ball State at +2.5 at BetUS and receive up to a 145% sign up bonus.

What gets lost in all the talk about Nate Davis is just how good of a QB Tulsa’s David Johnson is. Johnson helped lead Tulsa to a 10-3 mark this season and both he and Davis rank among the top 10 in the nation in passing efficiency. Also like Davis, Johnson stumbled in the Conference USA title game. Johnson threw a career-high five picks in the Golden Hurricane’s 27-24 loss to East Carolina in the Conference USA championship game on Dec. 6. It was the third loss in five games for Tulsa, and the first time Johnson had ever thrown more than two interceptions.

His counterpart was responsible for four fumbles in the MAC title game and two of those were returned for touchdowns by Buffalo.

There is little doubt by odds makers that both QB’s will bounce back as these two potent offenses are expected to put up a ton of points. Despite the number, being over/under being set at 75, plenty of football betting on the over is expected to take place. Tulsa running back Tarrion Adams has been a workhorse with 1,341 yards and 11 scores and provides nice balance for Johnson and the passing game. The Golden Hurricane rank eighth in the nation in rushing, averaging 254.8 yards per game. Tulsa is second in the country with 565.0 total yards per game. Johnson is second in the nation with a gaudy 179.6 passer rating. He threw for 3,866 yards and 43 touchdowns against just 11 picks.

Tulsa is making its fourth straight bowl appearance and Tulsa is no stranger to this particular bowl as it beat Bowling Green 63-7 in last season’s GMAC Bowl. That win proved to be the largest margin in bowl history. If you like the Golden Hurricane to get the job done, bet Tulsa at -2.5 at BetUS.

It is worth noting that Ball State is 0-6 all-time in bowl games and lost to Rutgers 52-30 in the International Bowl last season. But this is likely the best team that Ball State has ever had.

Despite losing four of their last six games, the Boston Celtics are still among the elite in the NBA.  The biggest problem for them in this mini-slump has been offensive production off of the bench.  Is signing Stephon Marbury the answer to that problem?

The Cavs are now #3 in our power rankings at 27-6, having lost 2 of their last 3.  It’s way too soon to push the panic button yet with the Cavs still leading the Central by 5.5 games over the Pistons, but Cleveland did have their worst offensive game of the year on Sunday against the Wizards, scoring just 77 points in a loss.

Orlando has won 8 of their last 10 and continues to stay one step against of the Hawks in the Southeast.  The key for the Magic has been outstanding play on the road, earning a 12-5 record as the visitor this season.

After their usual slow start, the San Antonio Spurs are flying under the radar again this year.  Sometimes you have to be reminded how good this group can be.  Tim Duncan is still averaging over 20 points and 10 rebounds per game and the Spurs have won 7 of their last 8.  You can bet on the Spurs tonight -3.5 at the Miami Heat.

The Hawks just keep hanging around, nipping at Orlando’s heels.  They’ve been great at home, but have struggled on the road at only 7-9 away from Philips Arena.  Joe Johnson and Mike Bibby give the Hawks one of the most dangerous backcourts in the NBA.

The Hornets could be a lot higher on this list, but they’ve struggled with Tyson Chandler jumping in and out of the lineup for various reasons.  Nevertheless, New Orleans point guard Chris Paul continues to be the best in the association averaging 20.1 points and 11.5 assists per game.

The Pistons adjusted quickly to Allen Iverson joining their squad and have now won 7 games in a row.  They are still 5.5 games back of the Cleveland Cavs, but if their defense continues to play like it has been, they could start closing that gap soon.

Rounding out the top 10 we have the Phoenix Suns.  The Suns have won 3 in a row and 7 of their last 10.  Phoenix has the unfortunate situation of being in the same division as the Lakers, but they are still a tough team to beat, particularly as of late with Shaq starting to heat up on both ends of the court.

Philly destroyed the Dallas Cowboys in their last game of the regular season, 44-6, sending the Cowboys home and helping to launch the Eagles into tonight’s game. Philadelphia was aided in part by some great play from their defense, who forced 5 turnovers and scored 2 touchdowns. Donovan McNabb had a mistake-free, but underwhelming day with a 12 for 21 performance for 175 yards, though he did toss 2 TDs and run for a third.

The Vikings rallied late in their Week 17 game, notching a 20-19 victory over the Giants with a 50-yard field goal from Ryan Longwell. Tavaris Jackson played well for the Vikes with 239 yards and a touchdown, giving the Vikings some hope for the post-season, as consistent quarterback play has been their biggest struggle throughout the season. Running back Adrian Peterson chipped in with 103 yards on 21 carries, 67 of those yards coming on one touchdown run. There’s no doubt that he’ll be a major factor in the outcome of the game, one way or another.

The Eagles have beaten the Vikings the last 4 times the two teams have met (and covered the spread), though they haven’t played each other since October of 2007. Philly ended the regular season ranked 6th in points per game with 26 and 9th in total yards per game with 350.5. The obvious stars on offense are Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook. Overall, the Eagles were also very successful on defense, allowing just 18.1 points per game and 274.3 yards per game, both ranking them in the top 5 in the NFL.

The Vikings put together just the 25th best passing game in the league, but their rushing attack, led by the NFL’s leading rusher, Adrian Peterson, ranked 5th in the league. Their 23.7 points per game ranks them 12th overall in the league. Defensively Minnesota had the best rush defense in the NFL and 6th ranked defense in overall yards allowed per game. The Vikings did struggle turning the ball over, however, ending the season with a minus-6 turnover margin.

Both teams finished the season on relatively high notes, but give the edge to the Eagles, who have clearly had a better overall season statistically. The Vikings will get a boost from their home fans, but, in the end, McNabb, Westbrook, and the rest of the Eagles should come out on top.

Texas coash Mack Brown is not alone when he says that he thinks his Longhorns should be playing for the national championship. After all, they beat the team that will be playing for it (Oklahoma) on January 8th. But coach Brown also knows that he and his boys cannot afford to dwell on the things they can’t control if they want to be focused enough to win their January 5th Fiesta Bowl matchup with Ohio State. NCAA football odds makers have listed Texas as an 8-point favorite with the total set at 51.5. Oklahoma is currently a 3.5-point underdog in the BCS title game so if the Horns win and the Sooners lose, expect the BCS bashing to begin.

The 11-1 Texas Longhorns are one play away from being in the BCS title game. They were the No. 1 team in the nation and leading then-No. 6 Texas Tech 33-32 with 1:29 left in the game in a November Big 12 contest. But Texas Tech ripped Texas’ heart out by scoring a touchdown with just 1 second remaining. Still, Texas felt it was in pretty good shape because it had three victories over ranked teams on its resume, most notably a 45-35 win over then-No. 1 Oklahoma on Oct. 11. The Horns finished in a three-way tie with the Sooners and the Red Raiders, but were denied the opportunity to compete in the Big 12 title game because the computers gave Oklahoma the higher BCS ranking to settle the tiebreaker.

Texas has a chance to pull off its biggest bowl win since the Vince Young-led Horns defeated USC in the 2006 Rose Bowl. Another star Texas QB, Heisman Trophy finalist Colts McCoy, will try to lead this Texas team to a big win over a program that has appeared in each of the last two BCS title games. McCoy set school marks with 3,445 yards passing and 32 touchdowns to go along with an NCAA-record 77.6 completion percentage. Like Young, McCoy also got the job done on the ground, rushing for a team-high 576 yards and adding 10 rushing scores. If you think the Longhorns get the job done in the Fiesta Bowl and cover the number in the process, bet Texas at -8 at BetUS.

The Buckeyes finished 10-2 and earned a share of their fourth straight Big Ten championship, but this Buckeyes team had hopes of playing in the Rose Bowl if not the BCS title game. They lost to Rose Bowl champion USC early in the season and Big Ten Co-champs Penn State to leave them sitting out the BCS title game for the first time in three seasons. The Buckeyes will be playing in their seveth BCS bowl in the 11-year history of the system. That is tied for the most appearanced with USC and Oklahoma. It’s last two BCS games however, have left the Buckeyes and the Big Ten looking bad. The Buckeyes were outplayed in losing the national title game two years in a row, falling 41-14 to Florida following the 2006 season and 38-24 to LSU last season after winning their first four BCS games. Ohio State entered the season as the No. 2 team in the country and will now have to prove that it is worthy of such post season acknowledgment.

The Buckeyes will try to get the job done with one of the best defenses in the country, led by linebacker James Laurinitis, and also with freshman sensation QB Terrelle Pryor. Pryor completed 62.2 percent of his throws for 1,158 yards with 12 touchdowns against only four picks. He also showed off his atheltic ability, rushing for 424 yards on the turf and five more scores. Chris Beanie Wells was Ohio State’s leading rusher with 1,091 yards and is considered one of the best backs in the country. He did not play in Ohio State’s earlier season loss to USC.

Defensively, Ohio State allowed only 13.1 ppg, which is 5.5 points better than Texas. The Buckeyes were also eighth in total defense, giving up just 279.3 yards per game. Playing in the pass-heavy Big 12, the Longhorns ranked 50th, allowing 339.9 yards per game. Perhaps, Ohio State’s sixth ranked passing defense will be able to limit Texas’ 11th ranked passing offense enough to keep it within striking distance. Peyton Manning ended the regular season as the NFL’s Most Valuable Player, and while his performance flew a bit under the radar this year, it was certainly deserving of the award.  Manning racked up 4,002 passing yards and threw for 27 touchdowns compared to just 12 interceptions.  Manning was able to find his usual targets on a regular basis.  Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark led the way for Indianapolis, grabbing 82 and 77 receptions, respectively.  Something the Colts lacked on offense this season was their running game.  With injuries to Joseph Addai, the Colts pretty much abandoned the running game and ended the regular season ranked 31st in rushing offense with only 79.6 yards per game.

The Colts ended the 2008 regular season with some impressive defensive numbers.  They allowed just 18.6 points per game and had one of the best secondaries in the league, allowing only 6 touchdown passes on the season.  The Colts did struggle at times to stop the run, ranking just 24th in the NFL in rushing yards allowed.  Indy’s strength on defense comes from a strong pass rush and good coverage down field, they’ll just need to shore up their defensive front against LaDainian Tomlinson, who hasn’t had his most productive year, but who is still a threat to have a big game.

If you look just at the raw numbers for the season, San Diego QB Philip Rivers had a better season than his counterpart.  Rivers threw for 4,009 yards, 34 TDs, 11 INTs, and led the NFL in passing rating at 105.5.  As I said earlier, LaDainian Tomlinson has struggled a bit this season, gaining 1,110 yards and scoring 12 touchdowns.  That would be considered a pretty productive year for most backs, but as Tomlinson is considered one of the best in the league, those numbers fell well short of expectations.

San Diego’s defense this season has been strong against the run, but not very effective against the pass.  The Chargers ranked 11th in the NFL in rushing yards allowed with 102.6 per game, but they ranked 31st in the NFL in passing defense, allowing 247.4 yards per game during the regular season.  This creates major concerns for the Bolts, who will face an Indianapolis team that relies so heavily on the pass to move the ball.

I think this game really comes down to the defensive play of both teams.  It’s obvious that both teams have done well on offense this season, but San Diego’s pass defense against Peyton Manning appears to be the most concerning factor in the game.  The way I see it, there is little chance that the Chargers can stop Indy’s passing attack on a regular basis and it will be difficult for the Chargers to keep up offensively with the way that the Colts’ secondary has played this year.  I’ll take Indy to win on the road tonight.
