For all of you novices out there, hopefully this article will better help you understand football odds. There are many different wagers you can make on football. The most popular wagers are made on the point spread, total, and money line. In addition to these, prop betting and futures betting are also fun wagers to make but normally don’t show as much potential for making major gains.

Here is an example of some college football odds. Florida State -7.5 is a typical line that you could see this college football season. This means that if you take the Seminoles on the point spread that they will have to win by more the 7.5 points for you to cash in on your wager. If the other line in this matchup is N.C. State +7.5, the Wolf Pack could lose by less than 7.5 points and you would cash in you bet if you were to place a wager on them.

Another bet you can place this season is a play on the total of a game. For example, let’s say the total of the Florida State/N.C. State game is 55.5. You can make a bet for the total points scored in this game to come in either over or under this number. With this particular line, because of the half point, a push is out of play. For those of you who don’t know, a push occurs, in this situation, when the total score of the game comes in right at the number. For example, if the total was just 55 and the game ended up 34-21. This would be a push and you wouldn’t win anything or lose anything. Personally, I hate pushes as they are worst than kissing your sister.

The last type of bet, we’re going to discuss is the money line bet. This is the simplest bet as you are simply betting on which team you think will win. I recommend using this bet only when the line is near a pick ‘em game. In order to take favorites on the money line you will have to pay tons of juice so the value is not very good.

These are the three main types of bets you will see Jimmy Boyd’s football picks made on. The only time you will see prop betting is during the Super Bowl and you can look for our futures bets in our football predictions articles.
