Fresno State at Boise State Football Picks & Predictions

Boise State tries to finish the regular season 12-0 the Friday against the Fresno State Bulldogs.  Boise is still fighting to maybe sneak into a BCS Bowl game, while Fresno State is trying to improve their bowl position, as well as knock off a team that has had their number for as long as anyone that’s currently associated with the team can remember.  The Bulldogs shouldn’t feel bad, though.  It seems like everyone loses to the Boise State Broncos, especially this year.  Boise State is favored by 21 over Fresno State and the total for the game is 56 points.

There’s been nothing wrong with the Fresno State offense this year.  The Bulldogs are posting 30.9 points per game and putting up over 390 yards of total offense.  They are running the ball well enough, averaging 5 yards per carry for 185 yards per game and throwing for 206 yards per game on 59.3% completions.  Their offense is what got them to the 7-4 record this season and if they want to knock off Boise, they’ll have to play their best game of the year offensively.

Defense has been the Achilles heel for Fresno State this year.  They aren’t awful, but their bad enough to take themselves out of games.  The Bulldogs give up 27.5 points per game and over 380 yards of total offense.  The running defense should be ashamed, allowing 5.1 yards per carry against them for a total of 193 rushing yards allowed per game.  The defense against the pass has been slightly better, allowing just 191 yards per game, but it’s obvious the Bulldogs’ four losses have been the result of a breakdown on the defensive side of the ball.  Against a powerful Boise State offense, the defense might dig a whole the Fresno offense can’t climb out of.  Don’t think the Bulldogs can stop the Broncos?  Bet on the Boise State Broncos -21 this Friday!

Boise State has been brilliant on offense this season.  They’ve posted an impressive 37.5 points per game and they’ve gained an eye-popping 453 yards per contest.  Their main mode of attack is through the air, averaging 298 yards per game, but they also come with a strong running attack that averages over 150 yards per game on a solid 4.3 yards per carry.  The Fresno State defense will have their hands full, no doubt about it.

On defense, Boise’s numbers are even more impressive than their offense.  They are allowing just 12.5 yards per game on 295 yards of total offense.  The rushing defense can boast that they only allow 107 yards per game, and the defensive secondary can’t really complain about allowing just 188 yards through the air.  The scary thing is that all of those numbers improve when the Broncos play at home.  You could take Fresno State +21 against Boise.

Boise looks to finish out an impressive undefeated season.  Sure, they play in the WAC, but their continued dominance of that conference deserves to be recognized.  Fresno has had a good, if not disappointing, season.  The Bulldogs were supposed to challenge Boise for the WAC crown this season, but more than likely, they’ll end up as just another notch on the Broncos’ belt.
