Georgia Tech at Georgia Football Picks & Predictions
Georgia and Georgia Tech collide in non-conference rivalry action this Saturday. Georgia Tech did what they had to last week by beating the Miami Hurricanes. Now they have to sit back and wait to see if Virginia Tech stumbles and lets them in the ACC Championship game. Georgia has had a very solid season. Though the Bulldogs were expected to contend for the national title, and have obviously fallen just short of that expectation. Looking back, however, it doesn’t seem so bad when Georgia’s only two losses are against Alabama and Florida, one of which will most likely be playing in the championship game while the other plays in a BCS bowl game. Georgia is currently a 7.5 point favorite over Georgia Tech with the total for the game set at 48.5.
Georgia Tech’s been solid this season with their running attack. They are generating 271 rushing yards per game on 49 attempts per game (5.5 yards per carry), and while their commitment to the run has caused the passing game to take a hit, the Yellow Jackets are obviously doing something right with their 8-3 record this season. Overall, the offense is putting up 24.5 points per game and 373 yards of total offense. They’ve struggled on the road, however, posting only 16 points per game, and they’ll likely need more than that this week against Georgia.
Defensively the old Ramblin’ Wreck of Georgia Tech has been very solid this season. They are allowing just 16 points per game and less than 300 yards of total offense per game. Their passing defense is very impressive, allowing a mere 177 yards per game through the air. This will be the best offense the Yellow Jackets have faced this season, however, so expecting the same results this week probably isn’t a good idea. Bet on Georgia Tech +7.5 here!
Georgia’s offense has been racking up some great numbers this season. They are gaining 429 yards of total offense per game, which has lead to 31.2 points per contest. They’ve found a good balance between the run and the pass, gaining 268 yards per game through the air and 161 yards per game on the ground. Georgia can be one of the best offenses in the nation, they’ve just had injuries and have shot themselves in the foot too many times this year.
Defense is where the Bulldogs have been lacking a bit this season. It’s not that they’ve been awful defensively, it just hasn’t been enough to the get past the elite teams in the SEC. Georgia gives up around 24 points per game on 308 yards of total offense. Both the running defense (105 yards per game) and the passing defense (allowing just 204 yards per game) have been good enough, so it’s hard see where the Georgia defense has gone wrong and given up over 3 touchdowns per game. That Bulldog running defense will be put to the test this week against a Tech team that runs nearly every down. You can take the Georgia Bulldogs -7.5 if you think they can pull away from Georgia Tech this Saturday.
Georgia’s season has been chalked up as a letdown, but the Bulldogs have still been very good against the majority of the competition they’ve played. Georgia Tech has been surprisingly tough in the ACC, and though they haven’t played the same level of competition as the Bulldogs, they should keep this rivalry game close.
