Georgia Tech v. Miami Football Odds & Picks

First place Miami takes on second place Georgia Tech in an ACC Coastal Division battle Thursday night. The Hurricanes have plenty of momentum on their side, having won five in a row for the first time since 2005, while the Yellow Jackets have had a week off to prepare for this big conference matchup. Odds makers feel the extra rest and preparation will pay off and have listed Georgia Tech as the 3.5-point favorite.
Miami’s defense came up big in its 16-14 win over Virginia Tech last week. Linebacker Sean Spence was crucial in the win, coming up with two big stops, including one on fourth down on Tech’s last drive. Defensive end Marcus Robinson was also instrumental with three sacks to help the Hurricanes improve to 7-3 on the season and 4-2 in the ACC. Without home field on its side this week, the Miami offense is going to have to be better. After a 12-play 76-yard touchdown drive on their second possession, the Canes settled for field goal on three other red zone trips. Those field goals stood up against the Hokies, but those are the kinds of things that can get you beat. Since, losing their first two conference games, the Canes have won four in a row, but they know this matchup with Georgia Tech will be no cakewalk.
Running back Javarris James continues to work his way back into the offense after missing four games with a sprained ankle. He carried nine times for 55 yards against the Cavaliers and then seven times for 29 yards and a touchdown against the Hokies. We expect him to get even more snaps this week. QB Robert Marve had runs of 18 and 15 yards that were career longs for the redshirt freshman, but he ended the night with a net 44 yards rushing after being sacked six times for 21 yards in losses. Marve was far from solid through the air, connecting on only 7 of 16 passes for 121 yards. Miami’s defense has been very strong during its winning streak and if the offense is able to do its part, the Canes will have an excellent shot at the upset. Unfortunately for Georgia Tech, it saw its ACC title hopes get flushed down the drain with a loss in Chapel Hill on November 8th, but the Jackets are still 7-3 on the year with a New Year’s Day Bowl well within their reach. A win over Miami here and then over Georgia the following week would almost certainly earn the Jackets an invite to the Gator Bowl as the third team selected from the ACC. Otherwise, the Music City Bowl and Chick-fil-A Bowls will be the next best options. Georgia Tech has beaten the Hurricanes three straight times but it has not beaten its in-state rivals in seven seasons. Offensively, injuries have held the Yellow Jackets back. The offensive line has caught a major case of the injury bug. It is so ravaged with injuries that defensive tackle Vance Walker was forced to move to offense against North Carolina and he ended up sustaining an injury in that game to total six injured lineman on the season. QB Josh Nesbitt has been battling some injuries of his own, largely due to taking a beating because of the thin line, however tailback Jonathan Dwyer has still managed to find holes to run through. He went over 100 yards for the seventh time this season. to take over the ACC rushing lead with his 147 yards against North Carolina. We anticipate seeing a heavy dose of Dwyer against the Canes this week. Defensively, Georgia Tech needs to tighten the screws. The Jackets have very good numbers on the season, only allowing 287.6 ypg and just 19 touchdowns, but they have given up 28 points in back-to-back games now. Georgia Tech also leads the ACC in scoring defense. The rest and extra preparation should definitely help Tech out this week. Bet Georgia Tech at -3.5 if you think it can end Miami’s winning streak.
