New York Giants at Arizona Cardinals NFL Picks & Predictions

The defending Super Bowl champs are 9-1 to start the season and looking like the team to beat once again. They’ll take on the Arizona Cardinals in the desert this Sunday where Arizona is yet to lose in four games this season. The Giants should feel right at home in the University of Phoenix Stadium as that is where they captured Super Bowl glory last February. BetUS odds makers have listed the Giants as 3-point favorites with the total set at 49.
The Giants decided to part ways with former league MVP Kurt Warner and to begin the maturation process of Eli Manning in his rookie season. The move paid off as the Giants were able to go to win a Super Bowl last season. Now, Kurt Warner is with the Cardinals and has a chance to beat his former team to clinch the NFC West this week.
The Giants defeated heavily favored New England 17-14 on February third behind a ferocious pass rush that continually got to NFL MVP Tom Brady. With Michael Strahan retiring and Osi Umenyiora going down with an injury, there were doubts heading into this season, but the Giants have been the most dominant team in the NFC and its pass rush continues to be the most feared in the NFL. New York continued to roll last Sunday, earning its fifth straight win with a 30-10 blowout over Baltimore. The Giants’ NFL-leading rushing attack, racked up 207 yards on the ground against a Ravens run defense that was only allowing 65.4 ypg this season (a NFL-low). Ahmad Bradshaw rushed nine times for 96 yards and Brandon Jacobs carried 11 times for 73 yards and two scores. New York is averaging 172.7 ypg on the ground this season. New York could be without their bruiser Jacobs this week as he has sustained a knee injury. If Jacobs can’t go, Derrick Ward will see more carries. New York’s defense impressed last week as well, limiting the Ravens to 275 total yards and just 154 through the air. New York’s secondary will face a much tougher test this week. If the Giants are to beat Arizona for the sixth time in the last eight meetings, it will likely fall on what king of a day Eli Manning. Arizona has been susceptible through the air, allowing 210 passing ypg and Manning will have no excuses with the perfect passing conditions in Phoenix. Arizona is 7-3 on the season thanks to Kurt Warner and a strong passing attack that is ranked second in the NFL. The Cards are averaging 305.8 passing ypg and Warner has taken full advantage of his pair of stud wideouts. Larry Fitzgerald has 939 yards and Anquan Boldin has 792 yards receiving already this season. A win over New York, a San Francisco loss to Dallas and a Seattle tie or loss at Washington will give the Cards their first division title since 1975 and its first playoff berth since 1998. While New York figures to bring the heat, just as they did in the Super Bowl to disrupt the Pats, few are better at getting rid of the ball quickly than Warner.
Home field has definitely treated the Cards well under coach Whisenhunt as they are 10-2 in their last 12 at at University of Phoenix Stadium. The Cardinals return home after defeating Seattle last week. Warner was 32 of 44 for 395 yards – his franchise-record fourth straight 300-yard game – to give Arizona its third straight win.
For the Cards to win, they’ll have to manage the Giants’ pass rush and they’ll have to rise to the occasion on defense. The Cardinals are giving up only 89.8 yards per game on the ground, but the Giants had little trouble running against a better Ravens rush defense last week. It will certainly help if Jacobs can’t go, but at this point he is making steady progress. If you like Arizona to continue its home dominance, bet the Cardinals at +3 at BetUS.
