Giants’ Coughlin on the Hot Seat

Written by Jimmy Boyd on January 17, 2010

At the beginning of the season NFL odds makers had the New York Giants among the favorites to win this year’s Super Bowl. Futures players who took the bait are now out their money. Giants head coach Tom Coughlin could be out of his sooner rather than later as well. The New York Daily News has reported that this coming season could be a make-or-break one for Coughlin.

Coughlin is familiar with the hot seat. He was firmly seated upon it before leading the Giants to a Super Bowl championship just two seasons ago. After doing so, it appeared that Coughlin would be invited to stay Giants head football coach for a lengthy period of time.  After all, he followed up the Super Bowl season with a division title, and the G-Men may have stood a chance to repeat if it wasn’t for the Plaxico Burress incident. He then led the Giants to a 5-0 start this season, but then the bottom fell out.

One would think that the organization would give Coughlin a pass for this season, but if the struggles continue in 2010, his job might just be in jeopardy, especially with a report from Jerome Bettis that Bill Cowher could be interested in the New York job. John Fox will likely be an option for the Giants come 2011 as well.

Coughlin will get a pass for this year but the NFL is a “what have you done for me lately” business. Next year, the Giants will have to make the playoffs and win at least a game. If they don’t and Cowher wants the job … it’s his! The Mara’s are great football owners and also astute business men. Coughlin can’t live forever on 2008.

No Buttkiss, couldn’t agree with you more. The NFL is such a “what have you done for me lately league” as you said and just making the playoffs likely isn’t good enough for Coughlin to stick around for 2011. I would expect it to take a marquee coach like Cowher to bump Coughlin out though. I can’t see the Giants making the same mistake (in my opinion) of dumping Coughlin for an unproven guy like the Bucs did when they dumped Gruden for Morris.

Got something to say?
