New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys NFL Odds & Picks

Written by Jimmy Boyd

NFC East rivals New York and Dallas throw down on NBC’s Sunday Night Football in one of the most anticipated matchups of Week 15. Round one went to the New York Giants as they crushed the 8.5-point spread with a 35-14 home win on November 2nd. The Cowboys are hoping that having QB Tony Romo in the lineup this time around will change their fortune. Odds makers think it will make all the difference in the world and have listed the Cowboys as 3-point favorites with the total set at 44.5.

The Giants have been one of the best investments for your NFL betting this season with an 11-2 straight up and 10-3 against the spread record. Prior to last week’s 14-20 defeat to Philadelphia, the Giants had won and covered seven straight games. New York has been good bang for the buck on the road this season with a 5-1 straight up and against the spread mark.

Last week, the offense was not up to snuff. While the Giants do miss the abilities of Plaxico Burress, they are still better than they showed. Manning completed 13 of 27 attempts for just 123 yards and a meaningless, last-minute TD to backup TE Darcy Johnson. The Eagles surprisingly elected not to rush Manning much and he still was off the mark. The Giants running game has been its glue all season long, averaging 155 yards per game, but it wasn’t there last week. The Eagles played the run and dared the Giants to pass and it worked like a charm. The Giants were limited to 88 total rushing yards in 24 carries, gaining only three of their 14 first downs on the ground.

Defensively, the vaunted Giants pass rush that destroyed Tom Brady in the Super Bowl was not able to disrupt Donovan McNabb. The pass rush generated just three QB hits, no interceptions and three passes defensed. McNabb was also allowed to escape the pocket to set up on the fringe or to run. He gained 20 yards in five carries and four of them were for big first downs. The All-Pro Brian Westbrook torched the Giants, with 131 rushing yards and 72 yards receiving. The Giants did not look anything like the NFL’s top-rated run defense. If you think the defending Super Bowl champs will bounce back this week, bet the Giants at +3 at Bookmaker.

Since Tony Romo has returned the Cowboys have gotten back to winning and that has meant that backers have gotten back to beating the NFL odds makers. Prior to last week’s loss to the Steelers, the Cowboys had won and covered four of their last five games.

There’s one thing we can expect from Dallas in this matchup and that’s its best effort of the season. This was the team that kept the Cowboys from a shot at making a Super Bowl run by knocking them out of the playoffs last season. At 8-5, the Cowboys are far from out of the woods in the tough NFC and they know that they need a win here with tough games against the Ravens and Eagles remaining. If they are to win this week, they’ll need much better from Tony Romo. Romo has the third worst game of his career statistically with four turnovers (three interceptions). The last interception was a pick-six that proved to be the game winner. What the Cowboys did gain from last week’s loss what another reliable option. Running back Tashard Choice was spectacular in place of the injured Marion Barber. He rushed for more yards against the Steelers than any running back all season. He also had over 70 yards in receptions to account for more than half of the Cowboys’ offense. The Cowboys are hopeful that Barber will be back in pads on Sunday night.

Defensively, Dallas played well enough to beat the Steelers. They were able to sack Ben Roethlisberger five times and they held Hines Ward to only one catch. They were even better against the run, holding down Steelers running backs Willie Parker and Mewelde Moore. The Cowboys were the better team for more than three quarters in Pittsburgh last week, but gave up 17 points in the final seven minutes. If you think Dallas has what it takes to beat the Giants this week, bet the Cowboys at -3 at Bookmaker.

Jimmy Boyd’s NFL picks will help you take your bankroll to new heights from now through the Super Bowl.
