New York Giants at Green Bay Packers Odds

Written by Jimmy Boyd on January 11, 2012

Two of the last four Super Bowl winners will do battle Sunday when the New York Giants visit the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round of the playoffs.

The Packers are currently listed as a 7.5-point favorite with the total set at 52.5.

The Giants moved one step closer to a second Super Bowl title in five seasons with a 24-2 victory over the Atlanta Falcons last Sunday.

Eli Manning had himself a game, connecting on 23 of 32 pass attempts for 277 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Two touchdown passes went to Hakeem Nicks, who led the team with six receptions and 115 receiving yards.

Brandon Jacobs led the way on the ground with 92 of the team’s 172 rushing yards.

The Packers, who had already locked up the top seed in the NFC, didn’t skip a beat offensively despite resting Aaron Rodgers in their 45-41 win over Detroit in Week 17.

Matt Flynn did his best impression of Rodgers by completing 31 of 44 passes for 480 yards with six touchdowns and one interception. Three touchdown passes found Jordy Nelson, who led the team with nine catches and 162 receiving yards.

Ryan Grant led the rushing attack with 48 yards on 12 totes.

The Packers have won six of the last eight in this series with the most recent being a 38-35 win in East Rutherford on Dec. 4.

Green Bay won 45-17 when the two teams last faced off at Lambeau Field on Dec. 26, 2010.

The Giants must do a better job against the pass if they hope to break through against the Packers Sunday. That, however, figures to be easier said than done.

Rodgers is 53 of 83 for 773 yards with eight touchdowns and one interception in his last two games against the Giants, who finished the regular season ranked 29th in the NFL against the pass with 255.1 yards allowed per game.

The Packers finished the regular season ranked dead last against the pass with 299.8 yards allowed per game, but the Giants would be foolish to put this one all on Manning.

The running game has been a big part of New York’s success.  That statement might be tough for some to come to terms with knowing it entered the playoffs ranked last in the league in rushing with 89.2 yards per game.  But consider that the Giants are 8-0 this season when rushing for more than 100 yards in a contest.

They could find some running room Sunday against a Green Bay defense that has allowed 123.6 rushing yards over its last eight games.

The Packers won three road games to advance to the Super Bowl last season, but they won’t complain about playing this game at home, where they are 8-0 straight up and 7-1 against the spread.

It is also worth noting that the Giants are 6-0 against the spread in their last six postseason games on the road.

In regard to the total, the over has been the play. These two have combined to finish over the number in each of the last four meetings.
