New York Giants at Minnesota Vikings Odds

Future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre is in danger of seeing his NFL-record consecutive starts streak come to an end when the Minnesota Vikings host the New York Giants Sunday.

Favre, who has started 297 consecutive games, suffered a sprained SC joint in last week’s 38-14 win over Buffalo. Favre has said he isn’t concerned with extending the streak and will only play if his shoulder will allow him to do so at a high level. This means it may be up to backup Tarvaris Jackson to lead the Vikings to a third straight win under interim coach Leslie Frazier.

NFL odds makers have listed the Vikings as 2-point underdogs with the total set at 43 this week.

While Favre’s chances of playing don’t look good right now, he has proven throughout his career that he can never be counted out. Coach Frazier said it best: “Brett Favre is so, so unique when it comes to recovering from injuries. I’m optimistic that he will be out there playing on Sunday.”

Perhaps of even more concern is the status of wide receiver Percy Harvin, who missed the Bills game with a migraine. Harvin also sat out Wednesday’s practice with another migraine. Like Favre, he is currently listed as questionable for Sunday.

At 5-7, Minnesota is still clinging to slim playoff hopes. Considering the interception problems that Minnesota’s quarterbacks have had, and considering how well New York defends the pass, running the football with Adrian Peterson figures to give the Vikings the best chance to win. Peterson carried 16 times for 107 yards and three touchdowns last week.

It is worth noting that Minnesota has won four in a row against the Giants, including a 44-7 blowout victory last season.

Every game counts for the 8-4 Giants down the stretch as they are in the midst of a tight playoff race in the NFC.

Running the football may give New York its best chance to win as well considering how poorly Eli Manning has performed against the Vikings in his career. Manning has lost all four career starts against Minnesota, throwing only two touchdown strikes compared to nine interceptions in those games.

Injuries to Steve Smith and Hakeem Nicks have caused Manning and the passing attack to struggle in recent weeks. Manning was just 15 of 25 for 161 yards and one interception in last week’s 31-7 win over Washington. The Giants could get a big boost from both receivers Sunday as they are listed as probable to return.

The New York running game looks to be in good shape with a healthy Brandon Jacobs expected to get the bulk of the carries from here on out. He only needed eight totes to tally 103 yards and two scores in last week’s win. The big fella is averaging a gaudy 8.6 yards per carry the last two games.

It is worth noting that the Giants are 7-1 against the spread in their last eight games as a road favorite of 3.0 or fewer points.
