Green Bay Packers at Chicago Bears NFL Spreads & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on December 9, 2009

The 8-4 Green Bay Packers visit the 5-7 Chicago Bears Sunday in a Week 14 Black and Blue Division showdown. Last week, Green Bay jumped out to a 17-0 lead and held on for a27-14 win over Baltimore on Monday Night Football. A day earlier, Chicago was able to snap its four-game skid with a 17-9 win over St. Louis. The Packers and Bears have already met once this season, clear back in Week 1, with the Packers intercepting Jay Cutler four times on their way to a 21-15 win. These teams have split the last six meetings but Chicago owns a 91-81-6 lead in the all-time series. NFL lines makers have listed the Green Bay Packers as a 3-point favorite with the total set at 41.

If the playoffs were to start today, the Packers would be in with a wild card berth while the Bears would be left out. Green Bay can go a step further in securing a playoff spot by pulling off its first season sweep over the Bears since 2003. If the defense can be as opportunistic as it was in the season’s first meeting, getting a win shouldn’t be a problem. Green Bay cornerback Charles Woodson is having a monster season with seven interceptions. He’ll be stalking Bears QB Jay Cutler Sunday, who leads the NFL with 20 interceptions. Woodson’s big plays in the secondary have really energized the Packers on numerous occasions this season. Picking off Cutler Sunday would go a long way toward a win.

As a whole, Green Bay’s new 3-4 scheme has paid off sooner that most expected. The Packers lead the NFL in total defense, only allowing 273.5 yards per game. And they are showing no signs of letting up despite being without starters Aaron Kampman and Al Harris. It is worth noting that the Packers are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 meetings in Chicago. If you like Green Bay to pull off the season sweep over the Bears and to cover the spread in the process, bet the Packers at -3 at Bodog.

It has been a humbling season for Cutler, who has been known throughout the NFL as a cocky player.  It seems Cutler’s cockiness was just him wearing his extreme confidence on his sleeve and we haven’t seen the same confident player this season. It is apparent that the interceptions have really taken a toll. Cutler will need to get his swagger back and play well if the Bears hope to knock off Green Bay this week.

While Cutler hasn’t been up to snuff, it hasn’t helped that the Bears haven’t been able to run the football. Matt Forte looked like a star in the making when he turned in a terrific rookie season, but he is averaging an NFC-worst 3.4 yards per carry among backs with at least 100 rushing attempts. It’s not all on Forte either. The offensive line must start opening some holes. If Chicago can make teams respect its running game, Cutler will have a lot more success through the air.

The Chicago defense has been stricken with injuries. What was supposed to be a respectable unit heading into the season has been very mediocre, ranking 15th in total defense and 21st in scoring defense. This unit will have to play one of its best games of the season to have a shot against the Packers’ 6th ranked offense Sunday. It is worth noting that the Bears are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 games as a home underdog of 3 points or less. If you like Chicago to pull off the small upset Sunday, bet the Bears at +3 at Bodog.
