Green Bay Packers at Detroit Lions NFL Week 12 Odds & Picks

Written by Jimmy Boyd on November 24, 2009

NFC North rivals Green Bay and Detroit meet on Thanksgiving Day as the Lions host their annual Turkey Day contest. Last week, the Packers improved to 6-4 with a 30-24 win over the 49ers to put themselves in position for an NFC wild card spot, but they unfortunately lost starting outside linebacker Aaron Kampman and starting corner Al Harris for the season in the victory. Detroit rallied to beat the Browns 38-37 behind a gutsy effort from rookie QB Matthew Stafford. These teams last met back in Week 6 with Green Bay winning 26-0. The win was the Packers 16th in the last 18 meetings with Detroit. NFL odds makers have listed the Green Bay Packers as an 11-point favorite with the total set at 47.5.

The Lions and Packers first met on Thanksgiving back in 1951 with Detroit winning that matchup, but the last time these teams met on Thanksgiving, Green Bay won 37-26. In fact, Detroit has now lost five straight on Turkey Day and odds makers are expecting a sixth.

While Detroit hasn’t been very good for about as long as I can remember, the fans still come out to support their team, especially on Thanksgiving Day. Unfortunately, they could be without their two best offensive weapons. Calvin Johnson has been in and out of the lineup all season and he is currently listed as questionable with hand and knee issues. At last check, Stafford was listed as doubtful with a shoulder injury that he sustained on Detroit’s winning drive last week. Hopefully, at least one will be able to go Thursday to try to exploit a Green Bay defense minus two of its best defensive players. If neither are able to go, Detroit will have to rely more heavily on its running game and an electric Thanksgiving crowd. It is worth noting that the Lions are 13-4-1 ATS in their last 18 games as an underdog of 10.5 or more points so if you think odds makers are spotting Detroit too many points, bet the Lions at +11 at Bodog.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy has never lost to the Lions, but his team will have to overcome the loss of two star defensive players and a short week of practice to keep his perfect record in tact. Aaron Rodgers has proven that he can put the team on his back, but the offense is much more effective when it gets something from Ryan Grant and the running game. Green Bay has ran the ball much better recently, going over the 150-yard mark in two of its last three games. Grant ran for 90 yards against the Lions in the season’s first meeting and he could be poised for another big day against a unit allowing 4.5 yards per carry. Rodgers could be poised for a big day as well when you consider that the Lions are allowing opposing quarterbacks to complete 70.4 percent of their passes. It is worth noting that the Packers are 6-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings in this matchup. If you like Green Bay to run up the score on Detroit, bet the Packers at -11 at Bodog.
