Green Bay Packers at St. Louis Rams NFL Picks & Betting Odds
The 1-1 Green Bay Packers travel to St. Louis to take on the 0-2 Rams at the Edward Jones Dome this Sunday in a Week 3 NFC showdown. Last week, the Packers fell 31-24 to the Bengals as they were unable to complete a late rally, and the Rams went down 9-7 to the Redskins in a defensive struggle. These teams have not met since 2007 when Brett Favre broke the all-time record for career passing yards in a 33-14 Packers win. This series has been neck and neck with each team splitting the last eight meetings. The Rams hold a slim 46-42-2 edge in the all-time series. NFL odds makers have listed the Packers as a 6.5-point favorite with the total set at 41.

The Rams have not enjoyed much a home field advantage in recent years. In fact, they have lost five straight home games and are just 2-14 at the Edward Jones Dome since 2007. If they hope to end their home skid this week, running back Steven Jackson will have to come up big. Steven Jackson has been hampered by injuries over the past couple seasons but when he’s healthy, he is clearly one of the best backs in the league. He rushed for 104 yards against the Redskins last week and you can count on seeing plenty of him against a Packers defense which allowed 141 yards to Bengals running back Cedric Benson in Week 2. Jackson had a big day the last time he faced the Packers, rushing for 143 yards. Green Bay does not yet appear completely settled in to its new 3-4 scheme and I look for the Rams to try to take advantage on the ground.
Defensively, St Louis looked much better last week, holding the Redskins to only nine points. I have to give rookie linebacker James Laurinaitis a lot of credit thus far as he leads the team with 22 tackles. For the Rams to win this week, they are going to have to be able to get to Aaron Rodgers, which is something both the Bears and Bengals were able to do. The 10 sacks the Packers have allowed are the most in the NFL and they will be without tackle Chad Clifton this week. However, the Rams have only been able to come up with one sack thus far, which is tied for second-worst in the NFL. It is also worth noting that the Packers are only 1-5 against the spread in their last six games as a favorite. If you like St. Louis catching points at home this week, bet the Rams at +6.5 at BetUS.
Green Bay is not out of the gate looking like the team most expected to see. The Packers’ first team offense was nearly unstoppable in the preseason, but that has been far from the case in the regular season. The offensive line has struggled to protect QB Aaron Rodgers and the defensive line has struggled to stop the run. Another developing theme is the accuracy of kicker Mason Crosby. Crosby really struggled in the preseason, connecting on just five of his 10 field goal attempts, and he has missed a field goal in each of Green Bay’s first two games. Offensively, Green Bay should be effective through the air this week as long as it can protect Rodgers. Look for a big game from wide receiver Greg Jennings, who was held without a reception for the first time in his career last week. It is also worth mentioning that the Rams are only 6-15 against the number in their last 21 home games. If you like Green Bay to bounce back strong with a big win on the road, bet the Packers at -6.5 at BetUS.
