Halftime Wagering

Lately, I have received a lot of emails concerning halftime wagering so we wanted to clear some common myths up for our visitors. When coming up with their first half line most odds makers just take the normal line for a game and cut it in half or they might shade a few points more on the favorite's side.  Of course, second half betting can be tough during the football season as odds makers scramble to set a line as many games come in at the same time.  Many customers ask if they should play my big unit plays on the halftimes as well as overall. To this I say you have to take a further look at the teams before making your decision because it can be a great option to further exploit your sportsbook. Everyone knows that there are teams that come out of the gate firing and there are teams that only show up down the stretch 'when it matters most'. A good example of this would be back in my days of being a professional golfer. While I grinded away on the mini-tours I noticed many interesting things about the golfers I was playing with: some got off to really great starts only to fade down the stretch, while others could hardly get off the first tee but still managed to fire low rounds. Of course my problem was I didn't get off to great starts and didn't finish well either, maybe that's why I gave up my dream of having the perfect day job!

Knowing who gets off to great starts and who finishes well can be a valuable tool for the professional gambler when used correctly or a major pitfall if not used in the right ways. A perfect example of this is the San Antonio Spurs during this playoff season. They have been getting off to great starts by murdering teams in the first half of their games, but they have faltered in the second half like they did in the first game of the Western Conference Finals. For the entire playoffs San Antonio is averaging a 48.5 to 40.8 halftime score but winning their games by an average score of only 96.2 to 91.2. That's an 8 point halftime lead turned into a 5 point lead by the end of the game! Obviously on a night like tonight, Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals, when I had handicapped San Antonio to win the game outright, they have to be a great play for the first half. The result in this situation was a favorable one as the Spurs carried a 69-44 halftime lead and my bankroll grew due to this bit of insight.

However, one of the pitfalls of halftime wagering is chasing good money after bad with any kind of sports picks. I have heard too many stories of people trying to recoup their losses by doubling down on the 2nd half of a game. Just because you think highly of a game but your team is down big in the first half, doesn't mean that it''''s a good play to take them in the 2nd half. Sure, sure I hear the well I thought they would cover the -10 to begin with so now when they are down 17 at half why wouldn't''''t I take them when they can lose by 10 and I win my money back? This is just bad thinking because gambling is a marathon not a sprint and you are going to lose your wind (your bankroll) fast making plays like that.

So when you are handicapping your own games or when taking advise from us professionals be sure to check out if your team is a first-half of second-half team, this could be a valuable bit of information that allows you to make bigger profits, but make sure you watch out for the pitfalls of halftime betting or it could only contribute to a losing cause.
