Harness Horse Racing Handicapping
If you plan on doing any harness horse racing handicapping then you need to realize that this is a totally different breed of betting than the thoroughbreds. You’ll need to realize that this is going to be a totally different style of wagering and you’ll have to adjust your tactics accordingly. If you don’t then you will be left without winning as much in profits as you should at the track. So with that being said let’s get down to it and break down some tips and recommendations we have.
The first thing that you will want to take into account is that the harness runners are a lot slower than their thoroughbred counterparts. These horses also race more and their consistency is of the most important things to consider from a betting standpoint. The best runners will be consistent and able to hold their form longer. These horses will be on the track every week, so they have to be well conditioned and tougher animals.
The classes that each horse has been racing in the past is something to consider. A conditioned race is based on the age, sex, money won, or races won, while a claiming race is an event where a runner can be bought. The races known as invitationals, preferreds, or open are for the fastest horses and will only have involved the best horses on the grounds.
A factor in the sulky races is the driver. This is more important than a jockey is as some of the drivers are head and shoulders above the rest of the pack. It can seem like these guys are always in the right place at the right time but maybe their skill has more to do with it than credit is given.
You’ll also want to look at the post positions as this factor is more important in harness handicapping than it is for thoroughbreds. The inside is key so you could see an advantage with a horse that hasn’t finished well in the past but was stuck on the outside positions. We look for these situations as real chances to take the racebook to town.
