Heisman Watch – Week 13

Written by Jimmy Boyd

Graham Harrell, Texas Tech’s QB has the Heisman Trophy to lose.  For Harrell, his Heisman hopes, as well as his team’s hopes for a BCS Championship all ride on the game this week against Oklahoma.  A win here solidifies him as this year’s Heisman winner, but a loss would really mix things up at the top of the list, particularly if Sam Bradford has an impressive showing.  Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, though, right now Harrell is the best player in the country on a team with a legit shot at the national championship.

From Texas Tech’s QB to Texas’s signal caller; Colt McCoy grabs the #2 spot again this week in the Heisman race.  McCoy’s stats are among the best overall in the nation.  He’s racked up 3,134 passing yards and accounted for 38 touchdowns (30 passing, 8 rushing), plus has a 77.2% completion percentage, good for best in the country.  If it weren’t for the Longhorn’s loss to Texas Tech, there’s no doubt he’d be at the top of this list.  He still has a chance depending on how things shake out between the Sooners and Red Radiers this weekend, but he’ll have to rely on someone else’s mistakes rather than relying on his own play right now.  Colt McCoy actually has the 3rd best odds right now at +300 to win the Heisman Trophy.  Both Graham Harrell and Sam Bradford are at +150 odds right now.

Yet another Big 12 QB comes in at #3 three on the Heisman watch list as Sam Bradford just keeps hanging around, poised to make his move.  If he’s going to do anything to help his chances in the Heisman race, he’ll need to get past Texas Tech and Graham Harrell.  As far as the impact one game can have on a players Heisman chances, Saturday’s game is a make-or-break game if Bradfords hopes to be holding that trophy come Heisman time.

Florida is on everyone’s list as the new team to beat in college football.  A big reason for that label has been the play of Tim Tebow.  Tebow’s numbers won’t blow you away, just 1,913 yards passing with 19 TDS and only 2 interceptions, but Tebow has that intangible “it” factor that everyone is always talking about.  If the Gators had 2 losses and weren’t drubbing ranked opponents by 50 points every week, Tebow wouldn’t even be in the conversation, but it just so happens that the Gators are the most dangerous team in the nation right now, and Tebow is leading the charge.

Graham Harrell’s favorite target, Michael Crabtree earns a spot at the bottom of our list this week.  Crabtree is the only non-quarterback player in the nation that can touch the kind of statistical years that Harrell, McCoy, and Bradford are having.  Crabtree has caught 78 balls this year for 1,010 yards and 18 touchdowns, exactly half of all of the TDs thrown by Harrell have gone to this one Texas Tech receiver.  There’s really no chance that Crabtree makes the jump over the quarterbacks on this list and take ths trophy, but it’s nice to see someone other than a quarterback on the list, isn’t it?
