Heisman Watch: Week 14

Written by Steve Janus

Graham Harrell’s team didn’t do anything to help his Heisman bid last week.  The Red Raiders were dismanteld by Oklahoma (and rival Heisman hopeful, Sam Bradford) to a final score od 21-65.  Despite the final score, Harrell still managed to put up 361 yards on 33 of 55 passing and connected for 3 touchdowns, adding one interception.  Texas Tech has been so good up to this point it’s hard to remember that Harrell has been the major reason Tech has rocketed up the college football polls this season.  Harrell still leads all FBS quarterbacks with 4,438 yards and 403.5 yards per game.  He doesn’t have the completion percentage of Colt McCoy (77.2%) or the passing touchdowns of Bradford (42), but he comes close to both in each category, completing 70.5 percent of his passes and tossing 39 TDs this year.  Last week was a letdown for Harrell and Texas Tech for sure.  The performance hurts his Heisman ranking, but it doesn’t knock him out of the top spot as he’s still been the best player in college football this season.

Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford moves up to #2 in our Heisman hopeful list this week after he and his Oklahoma Sooners blasted then-2nd ranked Texas Tech last Saturday.  Bradford was nearly perfect in the game, completing 14 of 19 attempts for 304 yards and 4 touchdowns.  Bradford now leads all FBS quarterbacks with 42 passing touchdowns and his 193.8 quarterback rating and 10.6 yards per completion are the best of any starting quarterback from a BCS conference.  While it’s true that Colt McCoy’s Texas Longhorns beat the Sooners earlier this season, Bradford and his team have been dominant since the loss.  It might not seem fair to have Bradford leapfrog Colt McCoy while McCoy was on a bye week, but Oklahoma’s high-profile win and Bradford’s continued individual success warrant the move up.

Texas didn’t play last week, so Colt McCoy certainly didn’t do anything to drop his stock in the Heisman race.  McCoy’s overall stats don’t quite compare with Harrell and Bradford’s, but his 77 percent completion rating is the best in the nation.  It’s not like McCoy has been underwhelming with his other stats, he has 3,134 passing yards and has thrown for 30 touchdowns.  McCoy can, and probably will, improve his numbers against Texas A&M this week.  The Heisman dream isn’t over for McCoy, there will still be chances for him to prove he’s worth of the prestigious award.

The Florida Gators and their former Heisman winner, Tim Tebow continue to dominate their competition.  As you would expect, the Gators destroyed The Citadel last week 70-19.  Tebow didn’t even finish the first half, but ended up with 201 yards passing, threw for 3 touchdowns, and added 34 yards rushing on 2 attempts.  Tebow isn’t going to touch the numbers put up by the other quarterbacks on this list, but his team’s dominance, his continued improvement, and the fact that he’s won this award before, all keep him at #4 on our Heisman watch list.

Iowa running back, Shonn Greene replaces Michael Crabtree on our list this week.  Crabtree had a lackluster performance, and his statistics aren’t even the best at his position this season.  Greene, on the other hand, is leading the FBS in rushing this season with 1,729 yards.  He’s averaging 6.2 yards per carry this season and he’s found the end zone 17 times.  Last week against Minnesota, Greene made a statement that he belongs as a serious contender for the Heisman.  Green ran for 144 yards, averaged 6.5 yards per carry, and found the end zone twice.  It’s not that his performance was that overwhelming, it’s that he puts numbers like that in the box score week after week.  He’s been consistently great for the Hawkeyes and is the major reason they’ve had the success they have this season.
