How to Bet on NBA Games
While the sports isn't as popular as it once was back
in the days of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry
Bird, a lot of people still want to know how to bet
on NBA games so they can add some excitement to the
contests. You have a lot of different options to
choose from, whether you just want to wager on a single
game, parlay a few wagers together, or bet on who is
going to win a division, conference, or the NBA title.

The main form of
NBA odds is the point
spread or "side". This is the kind of bet in which
there is a favorite which has to beat the underdog by a
certain number of points. At the end of the game
you take the favorite, minus the point spread and then
compare the scores to see who covered. The nice
thing about this is that you can take the underdog, lose
the game outright but by few enough points that you win
the game when you include the point spread. Now
the sportsbooks make
money off of this by forcing you to bet $1.10 for every
$1 you wish to win. If you end up tying, or
"pushing" as the books call it, then you will get the
money you wagered returned to you.
Another great way to bet on the NBA is
to use the moneyline. This eliminates the point
spread from the equation, but if you want to bet on the
favorite then you are going to have to bet more money to
win less. However, if you want the underdog then
you'll bet less to win more. The
odds will take into account
the difference between the two teams, so a heavy
favorite might be -400, while a slight favorite will be
-130 or so. Those numbers mean that you would have
to bet $4 to win $1 or bet $1.30 to win $1.
If you really want to get adventurous
then you can parlay your wagers together in order to
boost up your winnings. This is a higher
risk/higher reward type of wager in which you bet on
anywhere from 2-12 teams and you have to win all of the
bets in order to cash your wager. If you lose a
single game then your whole stake is lost to the book.
Here are some odds breakdowns for parlays:
2 Teams: 5/2
3 Teams: 6/1
4 Teams: 10/1
5 Teams: 25/1
6 Teams: 40/1
7 Teams: 75/1
8 Teams: 150/1
9 Teams: 300/1
10 Teams: 700/1
11 Teams: 1,100/1
12 Teams: 1,800/1
Futures bets in the NBA are when you
take a team to do something in the distant future.
All through the year the books will have odds posted who
they think is going to win the conferences and NBA
title, and then you can bet on which team you think is
going to take home the gold. The odds are in the
win/risk format such as 10/1. This means that you
risk $1 to win $10 if your team accomplishes the feat.
The longer the shot the team has at winning the higher
return you are going to get on your bet.
