Indianapolis Colts at St. Louis Rams NFL Odds & Picks
The 5-0 Indianapolis Colts take on the 0-6 St. Louis Rams this Sunday at the Edward Jones Dome in a Week 7 non-conference showdown. Last week, the Rams endured a heartbreaking 23-20 overtime loss in Jacksonville while the Colts were idle. These teams have not met since the 2005 season when the Colts rolled 45-28 to improve to 22-17-2 in the all-time series. The Indianapolis Colts are listed as a 13-point favorite with the total set at 45.

Dating back to last season, the Colts have won a league-best 14 straight regular season games and odds makers don’t seem to think that streak is in any kind of danger this week. Maybe that’s because the Colts are 48-7 when QB Peyton Manning throws at least two touchdown passes in a game and he is averaging 2.4 touchdown strikes per game this season. On the year, Manning is 133 for 181 for 1,645 yards and 12 touchdowns. He’s having a tremendous campaign despite having some new faces to throw to. Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark are still doing most of the damage, but Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie are making nice contributions also as Manning’s third and fourth options. I also like the way rookie running back Donald Brown has been playing. Sometimes you worry about young guys disappearing for a few games here and there but so far this trio has contributed well consistently. If they continue to do so when teams devise schemes to stop Wayne and Clark, Indy is going to be tough to beat. It is worth noting that the Rams are 3-11 against the number in their last 14 games as a home underdog. If you like Indy by at least two touchdowns Sunday, bet the Colts at -13 at Bookmaker.
If the Rams want to have a chance to win this football game they are going to have to ignore the media telling them that they have no chance or use it to fuel their fire. On paper, the Rams’ chances look bleak against the undefeated Colts and their future Hall of Fame quarterback. But the Raiders showed us last week with their win over the Eagles as a 14-point underdog that anything can happen on any given Sunday. Plus, the Rams took a Jacksonville team down to the wire last week that played Indy right down to the wire earlier this season.
Tactically speaking, the Rams must get some pressure on Manning or it is going to be very difficult to pull the upset. This would be a great spot for Chris Long, last year’s No. 2 overall draft pick, to have a breakout game. Long has only four sacks in 22 career games and he is yet to record a sack this season. The team showed confidence in him by giving him his first start of the season last week. Now it’s time to earn that paycheck against one of the league’s best offensive lines.
Teams have had success running against the Indy defense so Steven Jackson figures to be a workhorse Sunday. Jackson has averaged a strong 123.9 yards from scrimmage per game since the beginning of the 2006 season. It is worth noting that the Colts are only 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games as a favorite of 10.5 or more points. If you think St. Louis has what it takes to keep this one within the number, bet the Rams at +13 at Bookmaker.
