Jacksonville Jaguars at Seattle Seahawks NFL Picks & Betting Lines

Written by Jimmy Boyd

jags seahawks 10809The 2-2 Jacksonville Jaguars take on the 1-3 Seattle Seahawks at Qwest Field this Sunday in a Week 5 non-conference clash. After starting the season 0-2, the Jaguars won for the second straight week, crushing Tennessee 37-17. Meanwhile, the Seahawks fell for the third straight week, enduring a 34-17 loss to the Colts. These teams have not met since 2005 when Jacksonville won 26-14 behind a big day from Bryon Leftwich. But the Seahawks hold the slight edge historically, winning three of five meetings in the all-time series.  The books opened with the Seattle Seahawks as a 1.5-point favorite.

For Jacksonville to rattle off its third straight win, the recipe is pretty simple – have a big day on the ground. The Jaguars are 17-4 since the beginning of the 2006 season when rushing for 150 or more yards in a game. The Jags have run the football well each of the past two weeks, averaging 160.5 rushing yards per game. And Jacksonville has the luxury of running the football with one of the game’s best backs. Maurice Jones-Drew has rushed 63 times for 296 yards and five touchdowns this season. If you do the math, he’s averaging a strong 4.7 yards per carry. The guy is a great asset to have in the red zone as well, as he has a nose for the end zone. In fact, Jones-Drew has 45 touchdowns in his last 51 games.

The Jags could be tempted to take to the air a little bit more often this week, however, after watching Jay Cutler and the Bears and Peyton Manning and the Colts carve up the Seattle secondary the last two weeks.

Defensively, I’ll be watching rookie cornerback Derek Cox. I have been extremely impressed by the kid few have heard of out of William and Mary. Cox already has 21 stops, three pass breakups and two picks this season.  If you think Jacksonville keeps rolling this week, bet the Jaguars at Bookmaker.

The big question for the Seahawks is if Matt Hasselbeck will be able to go. He has missed each of the last two weeks with a rib injury and is listed as questionable Sunday. The Seahawks have struggled to find any rhythm offensively in his absence just as they did when he missed considerable time with a bulging disc in 2008. His return would give the Seahawks a big boost this week.

If Hasselbeck isn’t able to go, the offense could continue to struggle under Seneca Wallace and a banged up line. That means the defense is going to have to come up big to give the Seahawks a fighting chance. Jacksonville prefers to run, but David Garrard has played well each of the past two weeks and he won’t be afraid to hoist it up against a secondary that was suspect against the Bears and Colts.  If you think Seattle can get back on track, bet the Seahawks at Bookmaker.
