Jacksonville Jaguars at Tennessee Titans NFL Betting & Picks

Written by Jimmy Boyd on October 29, 2009

The 3-3 Jacksonville Jaguars look to get over the .500 mark in Week 8 when they visit the 0-6 Tennessee Titans at LP Field this Sunday. Both AFC South rivals enter this contest off a bye week so both teams should be well prepared. These two teams last met in Week 4 of this season with the Jaguars earning an impressive 37-17 win behind a big day from QB David Garrard. That win was the third for the Jags in the last four meetings, but they still trail 17-12 in the all-time series. NFL lines makers believe Tennessee will benefit from the bye week, listing the Titans as 3-point favorites with the total set at 45.

Basically, the Titans have two options: quit on the season or play it out. I would hope the defending AFC South champs would play it out. There are two major problems the Titans must address to start winning football games. The first thing they need is better quarterback play, whether that comes from Vince Young or Kerry Collins. The second thing the Titans need to do is defend the pass a lot better. Collins led the Titans to a No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs last season, but perhaps it’s time to see what Young can do. The former Texas start is 18-11 as a starter.

What gets lost in Tennessee’s miserable start is the fact that running back Chris Johnson is having a great season, averaging 6.3 yards per carry and 7.9 yards per catch. If the defense can step up and slow somebody down, the Titans should be able to have success grinding out wins with Johnson as their workhorse. It is worth noting that the Titans are 14-5-1 against the spread in their last 20 games as a home favorite of 3.0 points or less and the Jaguars are just 3-7 against the number in their last 10 games in Tennessee. If you like Tennessee to end its six-game skid this week, bet the Titans at -3 at BetUS.

When Jacksonville QB David Garrard throws two or more touchdown strikes in a game, the Jaguars are 12-4. Garrard had three touchdown passes when the Jags defeated the Titans in Week 4. Garrard could be the key again versus a Tennessee defense that has allowed over 300 yards passing in five of six games this season.

Most everything Jacksonville gets through the air is set up by its strong running threat. Running the football well has been synonymous with winning for the Jags. In fact, they are 16-4 when they gain at least 150 yards on the dirt since 2006. Tailback Maurice Jones-Drew leads the attack and few players have a nose for the end zone like he does. Jones-Drew has 48 touchdowns in 52 career games. It is worth noting that the Titans are just 1-5 against the spread this season and the underdog is 5-1 against the spread in the last six meetings. If you think Jacksonville has what it takes to pull off the season sweep, bet the Jaguars at +3 at BetUS.
