Free Sports Picks: The Janus Report for 12/23
The Atlanta Hawks will try to take full advantage of their longest homestand of the season (8 games) tonight against the 3-25 Oklahoma City Thunder. The Hawks have won 4 of their first 5 games on this homestand, with their only loss coming against the mighty Boston Celtics, who nobody can figure out how to beat right now. In Atlanta’s last game, Sunday against the Pistons, Mike Bibby steped up and poured in 27 points on route to a 85-78 Atlanta victory.
The Thunder are the worst team in the NBA this season with a 3-25 record. They’ve lost 9 of their last 10 games overall and are just 1-12 on the road this year. The one thing that the Thunder have been good at, however, is covering the spread. They are 15-12 against the spread on the season, including an amazing 10-3 ATS on the road. Kevin Durant continues to be a nice player for the Thunder, but he’s far from good enough to carry this team, and I think that’s been proven.
The bottom line here is that the Hawks are one of the best young teams in the NBA and their frontcourt of Mike Bibby, Joe Johnson, and Marvin Williams should run wild against OKC tonight.
Take the Atlanta Hawks -12
Predicted Score: Hawks 101, Thunder 84
The Boston Celtics are a ridiculous 26-2 this year and are on their way to the best start in NBA history. The Boston 3-Party of Garnett, Pierce, and Allen are playing with confidence and they are making it look easy to win night in and night out like few teams in NBA history have. They’ll be gunning for their 19th straight win against the 76ers tonight, which would give them the longest streak in franchise history and just 3 short of Houston’s amazing 22-game run last year.
The 76ers kick off a brutal 6-game road trip starting at Boston. Philly is 5-7 on the road this season. What’s odd about that record is that, whenever the 76ers have lost on the road this season, they’ve failed to cover the spread, and every game on the road they’ve won this year, they’ve managed to cover the spread. I don’t think 13 points is too much for the Celtics to win by at home over the 76ers tonight, who should continue their trend of failing to cover the spread in their road losses. Earlier this year at Boston, Philly fell to the Celtics 78-102.
Take the Boston Celtics -13
Predicted Score: Celtics 102, 76ers 80
