New York Jets at Denver Broncos Odds

Written by -

The 4-1 New York Jets will try to open 3-0 on the road for the first time since 2001 when they visit the 2-3 Denver Broncos Sunday. That will be no easy task considering Denver has won seven of the last 10 meetings, including four of the last five at home. That task becomes even more difficult if star cornerback Darrelle Revis isn’t able to go, especially since Denver boasts one of the best passing attacks in the league.

NFL odds makers are expecting a close game, but they have ultimately given the edge to the AFC East-leading Jets, listing them as a 3-point favorite with the total set at 41.

The Jets boasted the best pass defense in the NFL last season, but that certainly hasn’t been the case this year. With Revis banged up, the Jets rank just 23rd in pass defense, allowing 234.6 yards per game through the air.

After missing two games with a strained hamstring, Revis returned to action in New York’s 29-20 win over Minnesota. Revis has been limited in practice this week and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game.

Without Revis, quarterback Kyle Orton and the Broncos could be poised for a big day through the air. Denver’s 346.6 passing yards per game are good for second in the league.

New York’s best defense may be its offense this week. If the Jets can continue to find success in the running game, they’ll be able to keep the Denver offense off the field.

New York led the league is rushing in 2009, and it is back at it again. The Jets’ 165.2 rushing yards per game are tops in the league. Led by the dynamic duo of LaDainian Tomlinson and Shonn Greene, the Jets gashed Minnesota’s top 10 run defense for 155 yards on the ground last week.

The ability to run the football is making life easy for quarterback Mark Sanchez, who has made big strides since throwing 20 interceptions as a rookie. In fact, Sanchez is the only starting quarterback in the NFL that hasn’t turned the ball over this season (minimum 100 pass attempts).

New York has certainly been kind to backers on the road recently. In fact, the Jets are 7-1 against the spread in their last eight road games.

Kyle Orton is quietly becoming one of the better gunslingers in the NFL, ranking second in the league with 1,733 passing yards. He threw for 314 yards and two touchdowns last week against a Baltimore defense that ranks second in the league against the pass.

Orton will look to break the 300-yard mark for a fifth straight game Sunday, hoping that will be enough to get the Broncos back in the win column.

Orton’s favorite target, Brandon Lloyd, figures to be a handful for the Jets. Lloyd has recorded four 100-yard receiving games this season and leads the league with 589 total receiving yards.

If Revis isn’t able to go, Orton may be able to find some favorable matchups against New York’s lesser corners.

Denver is a better football team than I thought it would be after losing Brandon Marshall to the Dolphins and Elvis Dumervil to injury. But dealing with the death of a teammate and a host of other injuries is holding this team down right now.

Pro Bowl safety Brian Dawkins, cornerback Andre’ Goodman and linebacker Robert Ayers suffered injuries last week and won’t be able to go Sunday.

It would be a big lift if the Broncos could get running back Knowshon Moreno back in the lineup. He remains questionable with a hamstring injury.

Many good teams have bit the dust in the mile high altitude. In fact, Denver is 10-2 against the spread in its last 12 home games against excellent teams outscoring their opponents by 10 or more points per game.
