Johnny Damon Still Jobless
Here we are at the first of February and Johnny Damon is still looking for a place to play in 2010. What’s with these teams? Don’t they want a World Series outfielder? Someone will pick him up, but who will it be? There has been plenty of speculation from news outlets across the country, but Damon hasn’t ruled out returning to the New York Yankees.
The New York post reports that Damon foresees a scenario where he could sign with a team that could trade him to the Yanks at the deadline. Sounds like he would like to find a way to get back in those pinstripes and Milke Lupica of the New York Daily News says there is still time for the Yankees to sign Damon in his column.
There was speculation that Damon could return to Oakland, but now that doesn’t seem very plausible with the news that the A’s signed Gabe Gross.
Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune thinks that Detroit or Tampa Bay is most likely where Damon will end up.
It’s clear Damon is nearing the end of his career, but he showed just how valuable he still can be during the Yankees’ World Series run last fall. If I was the Yankees, I would want Damon back on board. Baseball odds makers have listed the New York Yankees as the favorite to win the 2010 World Series at 11 to 4 odds.
