Kansas City Chiefs at Philadelphia Eagles NFL Week 3 Picks & Betting Odds

Written by Jimmy Boyd on September 24, 2009

eagles chiefs 92409The 0-2 Kansas City Chiefs head to the City of Brotherly Love looking to get in the win column against the 1-1 Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. Last week, the Eagles were crushed 48-22 at home with QB Donovan McNabb on the bench with a broken rib and the Chiefs lost a 13-10 heartbreaker at home to division rival Oakland. These teams have not met since 2005 when the Eagles won 37-31 in a shootout. These two organizations have only faced off five times with the Eagles holding a 3-2 edge in the all-times series. NFL odds makers have listed the Philadelphia Eagles as a 9-point favorite with the total set at 42.

The Chiefs’ Week 2 loss marked its seventh straight home defeat, but lucky for them, they will be on the road this week.  Prior to the season, the Eagles were considered a strong contender to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, but injuries have already taken their toll. In other words, a young Kansas City team is getting the Eagles at the best possible time. QB Donovan McNabb, running back Brian Westbrook, and wide receiver DeSean Jackson are all banged up. McNabb is currently listed as doubtful, Jackson as questionable, and Westbrook as probable. Backup QB Kevin Kolb put up big yards in his first career start, throwing for 391 yards against the Saints, but he was also intercepted three times.

The biggest news this week might just be that Michael Vick is now eligible to play. The general consensus from Eagles camp, though, is that Vick still has a ways to go before he can be counted on as an every down quarterback. But keep in mind that Philadelphia experimented with a number of wildcat formations last week. I expect Vick to get on the field in one of these formations for his first regular season action since 2006. He likely won’t play extensively, but it will still be interesting to see the evolution of how Philly might come to use Vick on a regular basis. It is worth noting that the Eagles are 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games following a double-digit loss at home. If you expect Philly to bounce back strong this week, bet the Eagles at -9 at BetUS.

For the Chiefs to have a shot at pulling off the upset, QB Matt Cassel is going to have to play mistake-free football. Cassel was solid in his first start as a Chief, throwing for 241 yards and a touchdown, but his two interceptions proved costly. Kansas City won’t be able to afford miscues like those against an opportunistic Eagles defense which leads the NFL with six interceptions. And it’s about time the Chiefs’ offensive line opened up some running lanes for former Pro Bowl running back Larry Johnson. Thus far, Johnson is averaging only 2.8 yards per carry with his longest run being only 10 yards. Perhaps, he can break through against an Eagles defense which gave up 133 net rushing yards to the Saints last week. It is also worth noting that the Chiefs are 11-5 against the spread in their last 16 road games. If you think odds makers are spotting Kansas City too many, bet the Chiefs at +9 at BetUS.
