Kansas is off to a strong 2-0 start this season behind QB Todd Reesing and wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe. The two playmakers lead an offense which is averaging nearly 35 points per game after the first two weeks. Reesing has thrown for 668 yards and six touchdowns thus far. Briscoe has 16 receptions for 201 yards this season with four touchdowns.
Reesing has not just focused on Bricsoe either, he has sprayed the ball around to 11 other receivers this season. Freshman Daymond Patterson has 11 catches for 152 yards and two touchdowns and converted QB Kerry Meier has a team-high 18 grabs.
Many felt that Kansas’ first ever BCS bowl berth was the product of an easy schedule in 2007. But the Jayhawks showed everyone they belonged by defeating Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. The Jayhawks continue to fight the perception of being overrated this year and this week’s game with South Florida will go a long way in indicating if they are or are not.
Kansas won its first 11 games of 2007, but it was not tested this early one. In fact, the Jayhawks did not face a ranked opponent until an October 6th win over then No. 24 ranked Kansas State. They didn’t match up against a top 20 team until then played No. 3 ranked Mizzou on November 24th and that proved to be KU’s sole defeat of the season.
Kansas and South Florida have faced off once before back in September of 2006. The Jayhawks won a close 13-7 game in Lawrence and gave Bulls QB Matt Grothe plenty of trouble in that contest, intercepting him twice. You can bet the Jayhawks to beat the Bulls again at +3.5 at Bookmaker.
Grothe was a redshirt freshman, just getting his feet wet, the last time these two teams met. Now he is considered among the best QB’s in the Big East. The junior three for 346 yards and three touchdowns in last Saturday’s thrilling overtime win at Central Florida. Grothe is also a running threat and led the Bulls with 54 rushing yards last week.
South Florida may have the advantage playing this one at home after a short week of practice. The Bulls have won three straight games against ranked opponents. They posted upset wins over Auburn and West Virginia in 2007. This one wouldn’t really be considered an upset by the books as the Bulls are favored, but it would be in the eyes of the pollsters. You can bet the South Florida Bulls at -3.5 at BetUS.
While both offenses get plenty of ink, this matchup will likely come down to which defense will be able to stop the other. Jimmy Boyd has weighed both sides and is ready to deliver you his biggest Friday night primetime winner of the college football picks season on ESPN 2.
