Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers NFL Lines & Predictions

The Detroit Lions are playing to avoid making history for all the wrong reasons this week, but NFL odds makers are giving them little chance against division rival Green Bay, which beat the Lions 48-25 earlier this season. In fact, Green Bay has beaten the Lions 17 straight times at home dating back to 1992. Odds makers have listed the Packers as 9-point favorites with the total set at 43.

While the Lions are 0-15 on the season, including 0-7 on the road, NFL betting enthusiasts have still been able to find some value in this team. Making your NFL picks on the Lions in their seven road games would have landed you a profitable 5-2 record. Detroit has also been a profitable wager in division play. While it is 0-5 straight up, it is 3-2 against the number this season.

QB Daunte Culpepper remains doubtful for Sunday’s contest at Green Bay with an injured shoulder. That’s not nearly as significant as if wide receiver Calvin Johnson isn’t able to go. Johnson is listed as questionable with a bruised knee, but Johnson said he would play this week.

The Lions’ season can be summed up in one play in last week’s game. Calvin Johnson caught a 43-yard touchdown pass only to have it brought back because right tackle Gosder Cherilus wasn’t on the line of scrimmage.

QB Dan Orlovsky, who will get the call again this week, was 10 of 23 for 125 yards with two interceptions. Rookie running back Kevin Smith was a bright spot for the Lions. He rushed for 111 yards and a score on 24 carries.

Defensively, the Lions were terrible against the pass, allowing Drew Brees to go 30 of 40 for 351 yards and two touchdowns. The Lions have only four interceptions this season, not putting any fear into QB’s for taking chances down the field. The Lions will face another good QB in Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers this week. If you think Detroit will rise to the occasion to keep itselves from being the only 0-16 team in NFL history, bet the Lions at +13 at Bookmaker.

The Packers are much better than their record indicates, but that has not helped fans from becoming frustrated, considering that they were in the NFC title game a year ago. Packers backers have had a nice season, though, when betting the team in NFC North play where they are 3-2 straight up and 5-0 against the number. Taking the Packers against the Lions has been one of the surest bets in the NFL of late. Green Bay is a perfect 5-0 straight up and against the spread versus the Lions the last three seasons. They are 17-0 and 12-3-2 against the spread in games at Lambeau against Detroit since 1992.

The Packers come into this contest off five straight losses. Its latest was an overtime loss to the Bears on Monday Night Football. Green Bay has now lost seven of its last eight games. The Packers have been very competitive as six of its seven losses during this stretch have come by four points of less. Packers QB Aaron Rodgers is having a sensational season with 3,730 yards and 25 touchdowns. Running back Ryan Grant has rushed for 1,097 yards this season as a nice compliment. Offense has not been the problem. The Packers defense is allowing 23.9 ppg and has been giving up 144 rushing yards per game at home (4.9 ypc). If you like Green Bay to take out its frustrations on the lowly Lions, bet the Packers at -13 at Bookmaker.
