Louisiana Tech at Nevada Football Picks & Betting Odds
The 2-2 Louisiana Tech Bulldogs head west to take on the 1-3 Nevada Wolf Pack in a WAC showdown at Mackay Stadium in Reno, Nevada under the Friday night lights. Both teams are coming off big conference wins with the Bulldogs dominating Hawaii 27-6 and the Wolf Pack owning UNLV 63-28. Football odds makers like the Wolf Pack to keep right on rolling at home, listing Nevada as the 10.5-point favorite.

Louisiana Tech knows well that the key to its success is winning the running game battle. In 2008, the Bulldogs averaged 187.1 rushing yards per game to rank 2nd in the WAC and 27th in the country. And they only allowed 103.9 rushing yards per game to rank 2nd in the conference and 13th in the country. Louisiana Tech did not win that battle at Auburn or Navy, but it did against Hawaii. Perhaps that is a sign of a return to last year’s impressive results. The biggest key to winning this battle is running back Daniel Porter. He had a terrific 2008 season. He has been held down in the early going but he showed what he was capable of when he gashed Hawaii for 160 yards. Porter now has 2,514 career rushing yards, which is good for eighth all-time at Tech. Tech’s running game is key this week as the Bulldogs are going to want to control the time of possession to keep Nevada’s high powered offense off the field.
Defensively, Louisiana Tech impressed against Hawaii as well. The line dominated the line of scrimmage and came up with seven sacks. It also held the Warrriors to minus-7 yards on 16 rushing attempts. If you think odds makers are giving the Bulldogs too many points, bet Louisiana Tech at +10.5 at Sportsbook.com.
The Wolf Pack needed a win in the worst way after getting off to a horrible 0-3 start and they got it in style. Nevada rushed for a school record 559 yards on its way to a fifth straight win over rival UNLV. Three backs rushed for more than 170 yards, one of which was QB Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick could be shaking off his early season struggles as he rushed for 170 yards and completed 15 of 18 passes.
The offense was finally explosive, but it still turned the ball over four times. Nevada now has 14 turnovers on the season and likely won’t be able to survive a game full of blunders this week. The Pack need to clean up the penalties too as 15 infractions cost them 169 yards.
I expect the Wolf Pack to have a similar game plan to Louisiana Tech in that they would like to run the football. They averaged a ridiculous 10.2 yards per carry last week and they aren’t going to stop running it until the Bulldogs stop them. Defensively, it’s all about end Dontay Moch who had six tackles against UNLV, including 4.5 for loss, one sack and a forced fumble. If you think the Wolf Pack are primed and ready to bury another opponent, bet Nevada at -10.5 at Sportsbook.com.
