March Madness Handicapping
The month of March is sneaking up on us quickly so
there’s no time like the present to dive into some
March Madness handicapping tips to help you with
your conference tournament, NCAA tournament, and NIT
betting.
One of the biggest things you’ll have to conquer is the
mentality that the best team will cover the spread.
Remember that the best team doesn’t always win, the best
side wins. In conference tournament action, bubble teams
and teams who don’t have a shot at the NCAA tourney
outside winning their conference tournament are very
dangerous. Motivation is a big factor this time of year.
Also, keep it mind that the most important thing for Big
Dance shoe-ins, is to enter the NCAA tourney healthy and
fresh. The dogs tend to bark a little louder come
tourney time.
A tip that can’t be stated enough is money management.
From the start of conference tournament action to the
conclusion of the Final Four, there are a lot of games
and quite a long time frame. Don’t get too caught up in
the excitement early on and lay too much money down.
Think of March Madness as a marathon and not a sprint.
Focus on winning a little each day so that at the end of
the tournament you’ll have a nice mess of cash. The
worst thing you can do is double down when you lose.
One good approach to handicapping conference tournament
action is too look for spots to bet the teams that
finished the regular season strong and fade teams which
fell apart. Teams that have already cashed it in usually
don’t respond in big games. Teams which have something
to play for can be a great play.
Defense also wins this time of year. While shots don’t
fall some nights, defense can always be played at a high
level if the effort is there. Teams which always leave
it all out on the floor on the defensive end are solid
bets, especially in the underdog role.
Home court advantage is also critical. Teams playing
close to home with the biggest fan base usually do
pretty well. The Big Ten Conference Tournament will be
played in Indiana at Conseco Fieldhouse so expect Purdue
and Indiana University to show well.
Another must is to leave your biases at the door. If you
can’t bet against a certain team because it is your alma
mater or your favorite school since the time you were a
child, it’s best to just leave those schools alone. This
sounds easy enough, but you would be surprised at how
many people just give their money away because they fell
into this trap.
Hopefully, you will find some of these
March Madness tips
helpful in tournament action this year. If you get off
