Margarito Cintron Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on March 17, 2008

Antonio Margarito and Kermit Cintron face off Saturday April 12th at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey with the IBF Welterweight Title of the line. Jimmy Boyd weighs the Margarito-Cintron Odds in this boxing preview.

BodogLife.com lists former WBO World Welterweight Champion Margarito as the -285 favorite. Last July, Margarito lost his title to undefeated challenger Paul Williams and after the fight Margarito heavily disputed the decisions, claming that the punches he landed were more powerful, despite being out punched almost 2-1. Margarito brings in a professional record of 35-5-1 with 25 wins by knockout.

Kermit “The Killer” Cintron finds himself in the underdog role this Saturday night. Cintron has an impressive professional boxing record of 28 wins and just 1 loss with 26 of those wins coming by knockout. Few boxers, especially in his weight class, punch with as punch power. KO Magazine has compared his punching power to Felix Trinidad and Thomas Hearns. While boxing is a sport in which one must exude confidence to excel, few fighters in recent history have proven to back up their words as well as Cintron. When Floyd Mayweather spouted off saying that any boxer could make the transition to the UFC, UFC president Dana White quickly issued him a challenge. Mayweather clearly was not prepared to back up his words as he apologized for the statement and said that he had no interest in fighting Mixed Martial Arts. Cintron, however, said he could beat the UFC fighters at their own game and that he would be ready for any guy Mr. White through at him. It is this self belief that has made Cintron a champion.

I like the value that Cintron is getting here and that’s who I’m going with to win this fight. He is a more explosive puncher than Margarito. And the younger Cintron will have better endurance in a fight that I have slated to go the distance. Take Cintron at +225 and Over 9.5 rounds as we get underdog value for both calls.

You can catch this IBF title fight on the undercard of the Cotto vs. Gomez bout on HBO’s World Championship Boxing. The winners of these respective fights could face off in the fall.
